The play is presented in French, with a lively and physical performance style that has won over audiences at all levels of proficiency in French.
Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (The Bourgeois Gentleman) is a classic comic tale about social climbing and illusions of grandeur. In this play, Molière explores one of his favorite themes: the confusion of appearances and reality. Combining farce, satire, music and dance, the play examines the Jourdain family as it attempts to deal with Monsieur Jourdain’s eager efforts to jump up the status ladder.
Le Theatre Rural d’Animation Culturelle (T.R.A.C.) is a nonprofit theater company based in Beaumes-de-Venise in southern France. The T.R.A.C. has toured widely in Europe and North Africa and has come to the United States on four occasions. The troupe’s lively productions have entertained audiences at all levels of proficiency in French, though its performers also have considerable experience performing in non-French-speaking environments.
The T.R.A.C. hosts students in Goucher’s French theater study-abroad program when they travel to southern France.
This event is sponsored by Goucher’s Theatre Department, Modern Languages and Literatures Department, Faculty Lectures and Fellowships Committee, Student Government Association, Open Circle Theatre Club, French Club, and Schmidt Fund.
