Spring 2009 Innovation Grants

The Innovation Grant Program, now in its 12th year, has provided seed money to implement many exciting and effective campus projects proposed by Goucher students, faculty, and staff.

Past projects include Goucher’s recycling and composting programs, the launch of new student publications, and the support and expansion of study-abroad opportunities.

Funded by the Office of the President, grants range between $250 and $5,000. The typical project is awarded between $1,000 to $2,000.

The selection process was very competitive, but the following projects were chosen to receive Innovation Grants for the spring semester:
 
Project Clean Stream

$500
Awarded to: Sarah Edwards ’11
To bring Project Clean Stream, an initiative of the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, to Goucher College.
 
Support for Campus Yoga
$725
Awarded to: Janet Shambaugh, professor of biology; Dara Friedman-Wheeler, assistant professor of psychology; and Margaret-Ann Radford-Wedemeyer, assistant vice president for development and alumnae/i affairs
To provide a weekly yoga class on campus for faculty and staff that promotes health and wellbeing and provides a venue for community interaction.

Gopher a Picnic
$1,950
Awarded to: Molly Beckmann ’09 and Steve Speicher ’10
To put picnic tables, painted by Goucher students, in various locations on the residential quad and elsewhere on campus.
 
Goucher College Solvent Recycling Program
$3,000
Awarded to: Shai Levin, manager, Department of Chemistry; George Greco, chair, Department of Chemistry; Zach Zachary, chemical hygiene officer; Annette Wilson ’11; Julian Rees ’09; Evan Collins ’11; Rick Vaughan ’11; and Reema Khanchandani ’11
To implement an organic solvent recycling program at Goucher College.

Baltimore-Goucher Creative Connection
$500
Awarded to: Hilda Rizzo-Busack ’09, Shaina Longway ’10, Rachel Stark ’09, Elizabeth Bellsey ’12, and Lily Dodge ’12
To offer Baltimore middle school students the opportunity to publish works in Preface, the student literary and arts magazine of Goucher College.

Positive Academic Message Projects
$1,175
Awarded to: Michael Curry, France-Merrick professor in service learning
To create two pilot programs that encourage and support academic achievement at the Dallas Nicholas Elementary School, a longtime partner, in central Baltimore.

Stimson Beautification Project
$2,150
Awarded to: Melissa Smith, community living coordinator; Casey McNulty ’09; Arlynn Zachary ’11; and Evan Marx ’11
To beautify the Stimson courtyard and transform it into a gathering place for students.
