Political Americana

Winslow's tickets to the 1953 Inauguration Ceremonies.

The Clinton Ivan Winslow Political Memorabilia includes hundreds of unique political pins, buttons, and ephemera such as tickets and ballots from U.S. elections from the 1840s to 1980s. These items were collected by Winslow during his lifetime reflecting his love and interest in providing information on national issues, concerns, and political messages of a specific time.

The collection offers items such as a ribbon from the Whig Party’s national convention in 1844 in Baltimore, a communist party pin from 1968; and a pin from the 1900 election for Republican candidate McKinley and his vice president Teddy Roosevelt with the slogan, “A full dinner bucket.”

Some of the earliest buttons from the collection are from the 1877 election of Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tildon and the 1888 election of Grover Cleveland and Allen G. Thurman. The actual buttons are constructed in a way that reflects two early forms of photography called 'ferotypes' or 'tintypes.'
