When Dan Sterdt came from his home in Poughkeepsie, NY, to visit Goucher as a prospective student, he was impressed with the number of times his tour guide was stopped by people wanting to say “hi” or strike up a quick conversation.

“Everyone is so friendly here. There is an aura of community and warmth that I felt from just walking around on the tour, and that made it stick in my mind,” he says.

Early on, Sterdt became an active member of the Goucher community. His long list of committees, clubs, and leadership positions include assistant program director of Goucher Student Radio, sports editor for The Quindecim, Goucher ambassador, Connections leader, house president on House Council, Intramurals Committee member, and Psychology Club member.

Sterdt says he loves the sense of community at Goucher and how easy it is to become involved here.

He explains that because everyone at Goucher has “an open ear and an open door,” he has found ways to pursue his passion for sports and for his major — psychology — both in the classroom and in his extracurricular activities.

As sports editor of the student newspaper, The Quindecium, he is able to incorporate his two big interests by writing about sports from a psychological viewpoint.

Similarly, Sterdt has been able to combine sports and psychology — and realize a childhood dream — by having his own radio show at Goucher. He gets to play his favorite oldies, and he gets to discuss sports and the psychology behind sports.

His point of view about becoming involved on campus can be summed up by his feelings about Goucher Student Radio: “At Goucher, if you want a show, you have a show.”

Though he jokingly says his aspiration is to be paid to attend a World Series game, Sterdt is not ultimately sure what he wants to do when he leaves Goucher. But he feels that whatever path he chooses, he is going to be very well equipped, thanks to the invaluable resources he has been able to access on campus — his classes, professors, and extracurricular opportunities.
