Goucher College has received a limited supply of the H1N1 vaccine, and it will be administered to students at the next vaccination clinic on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Student Health Center. The seasonal flu vaccine will also be administered at this time.

Since the start of the fall semester, close to 150 students (and about 10 faculty/staff) have reported flu-like illness. Except for those who have become sick very recently, all of these students and faculty and staff members have recuperated and are back to their normal routines on campus. It seems that most people with symptoms are quite sick for a day or two, and then they begin to improve. Total recovery time has generally been five to seven days.

What Are E-Cigarettes?

Ever heard of e-cigarettes? We hadn’t either, but some members of the campus community have asked if they are covered by the college smoking policy. As you probably know, Goucher does not permit smoking in any Goucher vehicle or any campus building, and also prohibits smoking within 25 feet of any campus building. As you may not know, e-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that look like conventional cigarettes, typically contain cartridges of nicotine and other chemicals, and simulate smoking by creating vapor for the user to inhale.

This past weekend was relatively calm in terms of new cases of students with flu-like symptoms. Since Friday, September 25, there were only four additional students documented as demonstrating flu-like symptoms. This compares with much higher numbers of new cases reported each day in the previous weeks.

Last Friday I sent you an update about the H1N1 flu virus. At that time, Goucher had a handful of students who had been diagnosed with influenza-like illness. Not surprisingly, that number has increased with each day. In the past two days, approximately 35 more students and two faculty members have presented with flu-like symptoms, and one student with a pre-existing condition was briefly hospitalized. That student has since returned to campus and is recovering well.

In the interest of keeping the college community informed as we work through flu season on campus, I want to tell you that, to date, we have four students who have been diagnosed with influenza-like illnesses. We have not been able to confirm whether the students have contracted the H1N1 virus, also known as the swine flu, but local health officials have documented that the majority of individuals in this area who have flu-like symptoms do indeed have the H1N1 virus rather than the seasonal flu. In order to best protect the health of the entire Goucher community, we are treating the sick students as if they have H1N1.

Final Middle States Reaccreditation Report

Important Power Outage Notice

On Monday, May 25, 2009 (Memorial Day) a planned power outage will take place at Goucher to allow maintenance to be done on the college’s high-voltage systems. Please note that there will be no electrical power for the entire campus during this maintenance. The power outage is scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m., and power is expected to be restored no later than 6:00 p.m.

As you know, Goucher College has recently been reviewing its pandemic flu preparedness planning efforts. One service identified as critical, even in a crisis or emergency, is the distribution of the college’s payroll. In the event that the campus would ever need to be closed because of a severe flu outbreak or any other emergency, the on-campus distribution of paychecks would have to be suspended. Distribution of pay by direct deposit will not be interrupted by a campus closure. Enrolling now in the Direct Deposit Program will ensure that your payroll funds are always available on pay day, even in the case of an emergency.

Maintenance Work in Progress on Goucher Grounds

Many of you have noticed and raised questions about the maintenance crews working across from the gatehouse at Goucher's entrance. Baltimore County has required the college to install a small water-treatment facility that will monitor and maintain levels of discharged fats, oils, greases, and wastewater, ensuring that the college is 100 percent compliant with county code.

Middle East Peace Vigil

All students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend a vigil on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at 3:30 p.m. at Haebler Chapel, to pray for peace and to commemorate those who have lost their lives in the recent Middle East conflict in Gaza. The inauguration activities begin at 11:30 a.m., with the actual swearing-in of the president occurring shortly before noon. The entire ceremony will last until around 1:30 p.m., followed by a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue beginning at 2:30 p.m.
