Description: Goucher welcomes world-renowned author and New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman as the Robert and Jane Meyerhoff Visiting Professor. He will talk about his new book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution - And How it Can Renew America.

Panel members include Kim Coble, the Maryland director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation; Dr. Christopher Pyke, CTG Energetics’ director of climate change services; and Lewis C. Description: The Baltimore Regional Green Building Council presents this talk by John L. Knott Jr., as part of its 2008 Master Speaker Series. As President of Noisette Company, Knott's latest project is leading the master planning and revitalization of 3,000 acres of the City of North Charleston's historic urban core. Noisette has been recognized as one of the largest sustainable urban redevelopment's in the United States.

Event: Green Jobs Now: A Day to Build the New Economy!

Description: Green 4 All, 1 Sky, Al Gore's WE campaign and many other organizations and supporters against Global Warming are launching A National Day of Action. We are calling it, Green Jobs Now: A Day to Build the New Economy! In Baltimore, the Chesapeake Climate Action Network will host an event at Lake Clifton High School, which hosts the Entrepreneurial Training University, a a non-profit organization that is developing green jobs training programs. The rally is a call on Congress to appropriate funding so training programs like these can become a reality across the United States. Green-collar jobs will pull people out of poverty and improve the planet we all live on.

Description: The 2008 Tour of Solar Homes and Buildings covers two days, with a remarkable variety of design, technology and sustainable living concepts illustrated in over 40 homes.
Each touring day has a variety of unique educational opportunities to put a true environmental "spin" on your experience. All the solar tour homes will be listed in your tour guide. Your tour guide will be both your map and "passport" to gain entry to the sites on the tour. The guide will have descriptions, features and directions to each home as well as helpful information on installing a system in your home.

Event: Hike For Discovery - The Grand Canyon

Description: The Maryland Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will present a presentation on their 2007 trip to the Grand Canyon. The team will share their adventure with pictures of their hikes on the Rim, Grandview, and South Kaibab Trail. The team will may also discuss the Horseshoe Mesa and the abandoned copper mines in the canyon. Spend an evening with us to learn how you can be part of the 2009 team, or just come out and enjoy the picture presentation and get valuable first hand information on the Grand Canyon. Join us for a fun hands-on learning experience in the proper techniques of trail maintenance. The day will include a guided nature hike, information about invasive plants and the history of the Loch Raven Watershed. After helping to prevent trail erosion that will improve the quality of our drinking water, you'll feel great about making a difference for our precious natural water resource.

Event: Essential Camping Skills (Outing)

Time: 9 a.m.
Description: Camping is the foundation of most of our outdoor activities. No matter what sport you pursue, it all comes back to a pack, stove, tent and warm sleeping bag. Join the REI Outdoor School instructors as they teach you how to make a comfortable home for yourself in the wild. We will leave the trailhead for a day hike with all our gear until we find that little patch of ground we can call home. Then, we will set up a model campsite using proper Leave-No-Trace skills. Our instructors will show you where to position your kitchen area, your "bathroom facilities", and your tent site for maximum safety and comfort. Food storage and wildlife safety will also be covered. Our goal is to teach practical camping skills for use in every situation from car camping to long-distance backpacking.

Event: 2009 Robert and Jane Meyerhoff Visiting Professor: Dr. Wangari Maathai

Description: Dr. Wangari Maathai, an environmental and political activist, will give a lecture about her work. In 2004 Maathai became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her work with the Green Belt Movement, an organization she founded devoted to environmental conservation and reducing poverty through community tree planting. The organization has helped plant more than 40 million trees across Kenya to prevent soil erosion. This event is free but reservations required. Description: Glenn Ross (Baltimore City Paper Best Community Advocate) leads a bus tour of “toxic sites” in Baltimore City that have been victim to environmental injustice. Urban development has disproportionally affected the environmental health of certain areas in Baltimore, most of which are inhabited by minorities and low-income citizens. Description: Richard Pouyat (USDA, BES co-principal investigator) is a forest ecologist/soil scientist. Baltimore Ecosystem Study seeks to understand Baltimore as an ecological system, focusing on interactions of the social, biophysical, and built environments. Dr. Pouyat investigates human influences on forest ecosystems. Urban soils play important role as the "brown infrastructure" of urban landscapes performing ecosystem services related to carbon sequestration, sink for nutrients and contaminants, and water storage.

Description: John Mello is the Supervisor of B’more Green, Civic Works, Inc. (an environmental workforce development certification initiative of Civic Works). Civic Works is a non- profit organization, which serves Baltimore City’s disadvantaged youth and adult residents. John oversees B’more Green operations, program administration, staff and trainers. John is a certified Offender Workforce Development Specialist and is committed to developing environmentally sustainable living wage employment opportunities that are honest and profitable and benefit unemployed and under-employed people in the Baltimore region.

Description: Beth Strommen (Manager Baltimore Office of Sustainability) is an environmental scientist and urban planner. Before moving to Baltimore in 1991, she was a planner in the Hackensack Meadowlands of New Jersey. The Baltimore Sustainability Commission is responsible for planning and implementing the City-wide plan for sustainability, which they define as “meeting the environmental, social, and economic needs of Baltimore without compromising the ability of future generations to meet these needs.”
