“10 MPH: Seattle to Boston” Film Screening and Discussion

October 22, 2008 |

Goucher College will present a screening of the 2006 documentary “10 MPH: Seattle to Boston” on Wednesday, October 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Kelley Lecture Hall. Afterward, the film’s director Hunter Weeks and producer J. Fred Keough will answer audience members’ questions.

This event is open to the Goucher students, faculty, and staff. No reservations are required, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, contact Carrie Landfried, visiting assistant professor of French, at carrie.landfried@goucher.edu or 410-337-6572.

Filmmakers Hunter Weeks and Josh Caldwell quit their unfulfilling office jobs to direct this amusing documentary that follows an unusual road trip from Seattle to Boston. The film chronicles their journey through America’s back roads — on a 10 mph Segway. Caldwell rode the scooter while Weeks filmed their 4,064-mile trip, which took more than 100 days. From the people they meet in typical American business parks to those they encounter on the open road, the film’s cast of characters is as ever-changing as the country’s landscape, and the two filmmakers gain an understanding of life beyond their own worlds.

The Boston Globe called the film an “amusingly offbeat documentary,” and Christian Science Monitor said its “scenic photography and lively side characters make for a diverting trip.” The film was named the best documentary at the 2006 Lake Michigan Film Competition and the 2006 Solstice Film Festival.

This event is being sponsored by Goucher’s Frontiers Program.
