It is recommended that students bring a Laptop or Computer Workstation to campus. We recommend a wireless laptop because of its flexibility and ability to connect to Goucher “hot spots” and outside antennas. Starting in Fall 2006, Goucher College will present the Laptop Purchase Program offering incoming students the opportunity to buy a new laptop computer preloaded with essential campus software. For more information click here. Information on educational discounts on other computer purchases are available at www.goucher.edu/x1414.xml.
We recommend the use of the Windows XP Operating System for PCs and MacOS 10.3 or higher for Apple computers for optimal integration with the campus network. NOTE: Operating Systems no longer supported or compatible with the campus network: Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95/98/ME, or any version of MacOS below 9.0.
Your laptop or computer workstation should have an Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) to connect your computer to the campus network. Some popular brands are Linksys and 3Com.
If you have a laptop computer, you should consider purchasing an 802.11b/g wireless network card so that you can have wireless access to the campus network and the Internet in selected locations.
You should bring a category 5 Network Cable long enough (10 to 25 feet) to connect your laptop or computer workstation to the network wall outlet in your room.
Local telephone service is available but you will need to request this service and voice mail from the Help Desk to activate the telephone outlet in your residential hall room. If you want local telephone service you will need to bring a telephone and a telephone cable long enough (10 to 25 feet) to connect your telephone to the telephone outlet. Students should not bring a cordless phone because of problems that may occur due to interference. NOTE: Long distance rate plans are not available to students but students can use calling cards to make long distance calls.
Cable television channels are available but you will need to bring a Television. Talk to your roommate to determine who will be bringing the cable ready television.
A Television coaxial cable long enough (10 to 25 feet) to connect your television to the cable television wall outlet.
You should consider purchasing a surge protector to protect your computer and electronic devices and to provide you with additional electrical outlets for your room. If you are purchasing a surge protector, look for one that is rated for "computer equipment and peripherals".
McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware software is available for all students to download from the Information Technology web site.
