In September 2008, Dr. Ben Sugerman, Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy, will travel to Heidelberg, Germany to present on-going work on light echoes at the "Cosmic Dust: Near and Far." Dr. Sugerman has been assisted by Goucher Physics students Sean Lonsdale and Adrien Thormann (pictured below), who are using Hubble Space Telescope images of two recent supernovae, SN 1991T and SN 1998bu, to study the circumstellar and interstellar environments around each object.
This project has been supported by the Hubble Space Telescope grant GO-10607.
On May 27-31, 2008, Dr. Marin Pichler traveled to State College, PA with Danial Barker ('08) for the 39th Annual Division of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics meeting of the American Physics Society. They presented co-authored research on simultaneous trapping of K and Cs atoms using an all-diode laser setup being built in his lab in the Hoffberger Science building. The trapped, ultracold atoms will be used to form ultracold polar KCs molecules for further studies. In addition, Dr. Pichler also co-presented collaborative research on spectroscopy of high-pressure CS discharge and amplitude modulation of femtosecond-frequency comb lines by Rb atomic filter.
