Goucher College invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for International Studies. The position is available beginning in January 2009.
Founded in 1885, Goucher College is a vibrant, coeducational liberal arts college located on a beautiful, 287-acre wooded campus just north of Baltimore, with an enrollment of approximately 1,500 undergraduate and 400 FTE graduate students. In 2006, because we believe that international awareness is necessary for anyone who wants to lead a satisfying and successful life in today’s global community, Goucher College became the first in the nation to require all of its undergraduates to study abroad at least once before graduation.
Reporting to the Provost, the Associate Dean will oversee the Office of International Studies and offer leadership to help realize Goucher’s emphasis on international and intercultural learning, as described in the College’s strategic plan. S/he will engage in research to identify and analyze trends in higher education abroad, while working closely with the academic departments to oversee the implementation and integration of the study-abroad requirement into the curriculum; develop off-campus study opportunities around the world (both semester-long programs and three-week intensive courses in January and May/June); and work with the Provost on curriculum transformation.
The successful candidate will have at least three years of leadership experience in international programs, including demonstrated success in promoting education abroad, previous experience with supervising staff, and overseeing a complex study-abroad budget. S/he will have the ability to communicate effectively with faculty, students, and administration; have demonstrated success in securing external grants; and exhibit a strong commitment to liberal arts education. A Ph.D. is preferred. The ideal candidate will be fluent in at least one language besides English and will have lived or studied abroad. The successful candidate will be subject to a background check as a condition of employment.
Goucher College is committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community and encourages applicants who will help fulfill that mission. Applicants should send a cover letter, CV, and the names and contact information for three references to: Goucher College, Human Resources, 1021 Dulaney Valley Road, Baltimore, MD 21204. Review of applications will begin September 2, 2008, and will continue until the position is filled.
Goucher College is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
