Director of New Student Programs

Job Description: Reporting to both the academic and student life divisions, the Director of New Student Programs will provide leadership in the development of a comprehensive first-year experience program; coordinate orientation and other new student programs; provide mentoring and general counsel to all first-year and transfer students; and pro-actively engage new students who appear to be at risk.

Essential Job Functions:

First-Year Experience Leadership

· Play a lead role on the First-Year Experience Committee or related college committees whose goal is to create a common vision and synergistic direction for Goucher’s first-year programs. Coordinate marketing efforts that result from the creation of a common set of learning outcomes for the first-year experience.

· Create partnering relationships with and among first-year academic programs.

· Collaborate to develop and implement assessment tools.

Student Assistance

· Be visible to and available to all new students as a general resource and guide to assist with the acclimation to Goucher and home-to-college transition issues. This requires factual knowledge of college personnel, offices, policies and procedures, as well as familiarity with the personal challenges and questions facing new students.

· Reach out to faculty who teach and advise new students.

· Proactively engage new students who appear to be at risk (e.g., who are not attending classes and who are not responding to or taking advantage of advisers, Associate Deans, and/or other academic resources).

New Student Orientation

· Manage and coordinate Goucher’s comprehensive summer and fall orientation programs. Recruit, select, train, and advise the student orientation committee.

Early-Immersion Programs

· Responsible for the Early-Immersion programs-GOFOR, LEAP, SERVE, and FOSTER. Coordinate logistics and marketing efforts. Identify staff leaders for each program. Guide future enhancements and additions to these programs.

New Student Programming

· Communicate regularly with new students on events, policies, and other important information. This communication may be in the form of a newsletter or other media.

· Provide additional programming to new students as appropriate, working with related offices such as Community Living.

· Advise the first-year class officers.

Data Gathering

· Gather, analyze and report annually data and information related to retention of new students.

Special Projects

· Provide assistance to the Associate Deans of Students and Undergraduate Studies on special projects as needed.

Reporting Line: This position would report equally to the Associate Dean of Students and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and would act as a team player and liaison amongst all parties who advise and provide services to first-year students (e.g., advisers, the Academic Center for Excellence, Community Living, etc.).

Qualifications and Skills: Master’s Degree and three to five years experience, preferably in student affairs administration or academic support services. Key skills and abilities would include leadership and collaboration, the ability to develop partnering relationships with faculty, familiarity with assessment, ability to supervise students, demonstrated ability to proactively engage students, and a dedication to student outcomes. Strong written and verbal communication skills are also required.
