Goucher Celebrates Women's History Month

Goucher College is celebrating Women’s History Month with the following series of events, performances, and lectures designed to honor their achievement:

The Vagina Monologues

Tuesday, March 11, and Wednesday, March 12

7 p.m., Haebler Memorial Chapel  

Each monologue relates to the vagina as a tool of female empowerment and a symbol of individuality. Every year a new monologue is added to highlight a current issue affecting women around the world. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased the night of the program. All proceeds will benefit YANA Inc., a Baltimore-based nonprofit that offers outreach to women and girls who are involved in prostitution or who have been the victim of human trafficking, and V-Day, a nonprofit founded to use performances of “The Vagina Monologues” to raise money to benefit female victims of violence and sexual abuse. These performances are co-sponsored by the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance and the Office of Community Living and Multicultural Affairs.

 

Phenomenal Women Reception

3 p.m., Wednesday, March 12

Piano Lounge in the "T" 

A reception and display will celebrate all of the women who were nominated for having a special impact on another member of the Goucher community. This event is sponsored by the Student Activities Office.   

 

Working Women’s Wednesday

Wednesday, March 19

4 p.m., Gopher Hole  

All women faculty and staff members are invited to a happy hour that will feature music and prizes. This event is co-sponsored by the Office of Community Living and Multicultural Affairs, the Student Activities Office, the Administrative Employees Association, and the Office of Admissions.

 

Is America Ready for a Female President?

Tuesday, March 25

7 p.m., Haebler Memorial Chapel

Join experts, activists, and educators who will engage in a provocative panel discussion on whether the United States is ready for a female president. This event is open to the public. This event is sponsored by the Office of Community Living and Multicultural Affairs.

 

24th Annual Women Writing About Women

Wednesday, March 26

Student reading and dinner: 5:45 p.m., Heubeck Multipurpose Room

Dalia Sofer reading: 8 p.m., Buchner Hall

The Women’s Studies Department and the English Department at Goucher College are sponsoring the 24th Annual Women Writing About Women symposium. Dalia Sofer, author of The Septembers of Shiraz and this year’s writer-in-residence, will give a reading of her work at 8 p.m. in Buchner Hall. A dinner and student reading featuring Women Writing About Women contest winners will be held at 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively, in the campus’s Heubeck Multipurpose Room. Women’s Empowerment Expo

Thursday, March 27

11 a.m., Pearlstone Atrium

Women-centered interest groups will present information and sell handcrafts and other items. All proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Demonstration on Rape Aggression Defense

Thursday, March 27

7 p.m., Gopher Hole

Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.), a women’s self-defense and empowerment course, is now offered as a non-credit physical education class on campus. Goucher’s instructors will demonstrate R.A.D. principles and talk about general safety tips for college-aged women. This event is sponsored by Public Safety and the Office of Community Living and Multicultural Affairs.
