Goucher Retires 10th Jersey in Athletics Program's History

Release date: January 26, 2008 |

Stephanie LaGue ’05 will be the 10th person in the history of Goucher College’s intercollegiate athletics program to have his or her jersey retired. A formal ceremony will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Juniata College. For additional information, contact Tom Till at (410) 337-6388 or ttill@goucher.edu.

During her four years at Goucher, LaGue earned seven Capital Athletic Conference titles, including three in 2004-05. She was CAC champion in the 200-yard individual medley all four years. LaGue was named the CAC Female Rookie Swimmer of the Year in 2001-02, the CAC Female Swimmer of the Year in 2003-03 and 2004-05, and she was selected to receive Maryland’s 2005 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, which honors senior student-athletes for their cumulative collegiate achievements in service, leadership, athletics, and academics.

Her academic accomplishments include earning the 2004 Goucher’s Scholar-Athlete Award, which goes to a junior based on academic achievements and athletic success, and receiving one of four post-graduate scholarships awarded in 2005 by the Maryland Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

For a former Goucher student-athlete to be considered for jersey retirement, he or she must be a “truly great player in his or her sport” who is nominated by a head coach or full-time member of the Athletics Department and who receives a two-thirds vote of approval from a group of staff members. The student-athlete must have spent at least two years competing at Goucher, completing his or her final year of eligibility at Goucher and graduating from the college. A player's jersey — or, in this case, swimsuit — will not be considered for retirement until a year has passed since the student graduated from Goucher.
