What Can You Do?What can you do? Goucher College cannot reach its goal of environmental sustainability without the support of its students, staff, and faculty. Over the past few years, students have pushed Goucher toward sustainability by developing programs and projects to monitor and enhance the college’s recycling program; to raise awareness about the importance of carbon-neutrality policies on campus; and to start a composting program, organic garden, and greenhouse production. Students and members of the faculty and staff have also worked together to guide the college’s environmental initiatives. Their dedicated efforts have resulted in the creation of the brand new Goucher Environmental Sustainability Advisory Council. But the community’s work is far from finished. From the laboratory to the dorm room to the dining hall, there are little things each community member can do that, collectively, will make a big impact on campus. Using compact fluorescent bulbs, printing on recycled paper, taking shorter showers, and eating locally grown food are just a few of the simple changes community members can make. Everyone is encouraged to educate themselves about environmental issues and activism by attending environmental events on and off campus and by checking out topical books and films. Students are urged to investigate which classes they can take to fulfill the environmental sustainability requirement, as well as related volunteer opportunities and internships. (Information about all of the above can be found on the webpages that follow.) Each community member can decide how much effort he or she wants to put into making the campus more environmentally sustainable. At Goucher, we know every action counts -- no matter how big or small. |
