As we enhance our academic program to reflect the educational needs of the global culture and community of our time, we must also transform the campus environment to take advantage of the possibilities that technology affords us and to accommodate the new ways our students, faculty, and other community members communicate, connect with one another, teach each other, and learn.
At the core of our efforts in this area will be the Goucher College Athenaeum. It will weave together the various threads of life at Goucher in one signature building—a physical centerpiece for the campus and the figurative heart of our academic community. It will be built around an expansive, technologically superior library. Outside the library’s doors, a spacious open forum will serve as a focal point for performances, public discussions, and other events.
Adjoining these central elements will be a café, an art gallery, a center for the college’s community service and multicultural affairs programming, a commuter lounge, and spaces for exercise, quiet conversation, and relaxation.
As the library moves to become the anchor of the Athenaeum, we will renovate the building it currently occupies to provide more and better space for faculty offices, classrooms, and other purposes. We will continue to develop and enhance our existing academic infrastructure. And we will seek new ways of reaching out to the communities around Goucher through facilities that reconnect us with our roots in the city of Baltimore.
