Many students in psychology at Goucher have engaged in a variety of study-abroad opportunities even before the new international emphasis took place in 2006. Psychology students take a wide variety of courses abroad: Some pursue the study of foreign language, dance, art history, history or other general education courses, and others focus on psychology-related courses.
Regardless of what they study, study-abroad opportunities are a very positive experience for many students, allowing them to broaden their liberal arts education and achieve more global awareness. Students get firsthand exposure to different lifestyle, social structures and policies as they immerse themselves in their studies.
In particular, much of what psychology students study in the classroom can lead to deeper understandings when viewed in a global context. For psychology majors/minors, study abroad is a chance to learn different perspectives about psychology and human behavior. When they come back from study abroad, students are much more aware of the world around them, and the diversities and similarities of people.
Some examples of programs that psychology students have attended in recent years are: the University of Salamanca in Spain, the University of Westminster and Oxford University in England, the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, the Macquarie University in Australia. Other programs have been in Italy, Thailand and India.
The following are some psychology students’ experiences abroad :
Twenty-two Romanian children: The world view of those with mental and physical disabilities
Children with Special Needs: Danish Theory and Practice class in Copenhagen, Denmark
Contemporary Dance Study-Abroad Experience in Brazil
