Goucher College, a vibrant independent, coeducational liberal arts college of approximately 1,500 undergraduates and 400 FTE graduate students, seeks a creative mastermind to serve as director of communications. The person hired for this vital position will report directly to the president and will be responsible for developing, implementing, and administering a comprehensive program of publications, media relations, online and new media, internal communications, special events, and advertising.
The director of communications will oversee a strong staff that includes two-person teams in media relations, writing, and design; a design and production manager; and the college webmaster. The office is responsible for developing innovative print and online communications for all major college operations, including admissions and development, and for maintaining high graphic and editorial standards throughout the college’s family of publications. Working closely with the president and other members of the senior staff, the director of communications will be expected to set college-wide strategy with respect to messaging, branding, and marketing, and to continue building on the college’s media-relations successes of recent years.
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred), 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience directing communications efforts (experience in higher education preferred), knowledge of emerging communication technologies, and experience managing a staff and budgets. Excellent writing and editing skills necessary.
