Lindsey Hendricks Wins Goldwater Scholarship

Release date: May 02, 2007 |

Goucher College junior Lindsey Hendricks recently won the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, an undergraduate award meant to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,110 sophomores and juniors nationwide who were nominated by the faculties of their colleges and universities. Hendricks, a biology major and International Scholars Program participant at Goucher, was among the 317 awardees. The scholarship will help cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to $7,500 per year.

Hendricks will work for the next two years under the guidance of Cynthia Kicklighter, assistant professor of biology, researching predator-prey interactions in Chesapeake Bay organisms. She is investigating the strategies prey species use to deter predators from feeding upon them.

The scholarship was made available through the Goldwater Foundation, a federally endowed agency that has given more than 5,200 students about $51 million in funding during its 19-year history.
