A Letter from the President

Dear Members of the Goucher College Community,

As you know, we have been working hard at Goucher College to fulfill the ambitious aims of the Strategic Plan we adopted in May 2002.

We have instituted a groundbreaking undergraduate study-abroad requirement that we believe has the potential to revolutionize the way American colleges approach international education. We have transformed our curriculum in support of the values, traditions, and ideals we hold most dear. We have made important strides toward diversifying our campus community, and our student body continues to grow in size and prestige.

Now we are preparing to mount perhaps the most visible stage of our efforts to build at Goucher College the liberal arts institution of the 21st century. On April 27, 2007, we will break ground for the Athenaeum—a signature building for our campus that we envision becoming the very heart of our community, and a vital point of connection between the various academic, cultural, and social pursuits encompassed therein.

Thanks to the very generous contributions of a distinguished group of early supporters, we are well on our way toward attaining this critical first milestone in the construction of the Athenaeum. In the comprehensive description that follows, you will find quite a number of places within the building that we have already named in honor of the people who have expressed their deep belief in the worthiness of our vision through major financial support. They will forever be among the great spirits that animate the building that proudly bears their names, and they will forever have our sincerest gratitude.

There is still room—plenty of it—for others who wish to join them. I hope you will regard this statement of our vision for the Athenaeum with an eye toward not only the possibilities it represents for the Goucher community members who will pass through it from day to day, but also the great opportunity it represents for you to help us realize those possibilities in a way that will shape the Goucher community for decades upon decades to come.

Sincerely,

Sanford J. Ungar
President
