Professor Rose is Professor of Philosophy and formerly Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion. He specializes in ancient Greek philosophy, late Classical, and contemporary continental philosophy. He is particularly interested in application of phenomenology, existentialism, hermeneutics, and deconstruction to the ancients. Professor Rose’s special interests focus on the history of metaphysics—the study of being — arising out of Plato and Aristotle and the nineteen and twentieth century displacements of metaphysics in Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Derrida. He has published articles and presented papers on the Presocratics, Plato, Nietzsche, Heidegger thought through in a variety of contexts such as philosophy of geography, philosophy of literature, and philosophy of time. His works in progress include a book on the connection between music and philosophy in Plato and a book on Plotinus, Heidegger, and Derrida. Professor Rose is also currently the Secretary/Treasurer of the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Loyola College in Baltimore and a Ph.D. from Georgetown University.
