Research Interests:
My primary interest in mathematics is abstract algebra, especially as it applies to cryptology. But I have also written on artificial intelligence and developed expert systems in the fields of psychiatry, ophthalmology, information retrieval, and computer system configuration. Fascinated by relationships between mathematics and music, in recent years I have composed several electronic music pieces including some based on the Fibonacci sequence and fractal geometry. On three occasions I have organized sessions on both music and sports at meetings of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society, and have lectured on topics as diverse as electoral systems and professional boxing. Also interested in the philosophy of mathematics, I have team taught courses both in philosophy and cognitive science here at Goucher College.
