The end of an academic year is always the time to celebrate our students’ achievements. At the Honors Convocation in Kraushaar Auditorium, which was held on the last day of classes, students were recognized for their outstanding academic work, leadership skills, and commitment to community service. I am very pleased that several Goucher II graduates in the Class of 2006 received awards in these categories. They continue the fine tradition of Goucher II students contributing to all facets of the campus community and earning recognition for their good work.

Goucher II reached a milestone in 2005, marking 25 years of enrolling nontraditional students in a program specially designed to help them complete their college degrees. The program’s administrators can point proudly to the achievements of its graduates, who have continued their education in graduate programs, pursued interesting and meaningful careers, and invested themselves in community service.

Goucher II graduates have earned graduate degrees in education, counseling, Jewish studies, law, media science, public relations, and social work. They have continued their studies at American University, Baltimore Hebrew University, Loyola College, the University of Maryland, and many other institutions, and have pursued careers in the corporate world as well as in government and nonprofit organizations.

Goucher holds great appeal for nontraditional students. The strong liberal arts curriculum, combined with experiential learning through internships, studyabroad programs, and independent study and research projects, enable students to discover their interests and talents and broaden their base of knowledge. Goucher’s small classes and the personal attention of its faculty are also influential factors, demonstrating the college’s mutually supportive learning environment. Goucher II continues to attract strong applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences, including students from California, Connecticut, Maine, and New York.

Goucher II students enhance the community with the life experience they bring to the classrooms, their contribution to campus diversity, and their obvious commitment to learning and education. I look forward to welcoming the new Goucher II students who will enroll this fall and to encouraging future applicants to make Goucher their first choice.
