Stephanie Powell is Artistic Director of the Stephanie Powell DanseEnsemble; Glory to God Arts Ministry, In The Spirit Dance Ministry, and director of Baltimore DanceTech, Inc. Ms. Powell is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University with a Masters Degree in Liberal Arts. Her undergraduate degree in Dance Education with Certification and Performance/Choreography was obtained from Goucher College. She is on the faculty of the Baltimore School for the Arts, Towson University, and Goucher College. Ms. Powell is also the ballet and modern dance instructor for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
As a guest choreographer throughout the United States, her works can be seen in the repertories of the Jacksonville University, Northern Illinois University, The Ballet Theater of Maryland, Towson University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Gettysburg Dance Center, and Anne Arundel Community College. Ms. Powell was guest artist and choreographer for the Berkeley Ballet Theater in California for seven consecutive summers.
Numerous awards and grants received by Ms. Powell have included the Individual Artist Award in Choreography from the Maryland State Arts Council for 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003; Emerging Artists series at the Dance Place in Washington D.C. for 1998 and 1999; City Arts Grants awarded by the City of Baltimore for 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2003; and the Distinguished Black Marylander Award in 2000. On October 21, 2001, Ms. Powell was presented with the prestigious Lehman Award at a ceremony in Los Angeles, CA. She was honored for her contributions to the advancement and promotion of dance through performance, choreography, and education.
Dancers trained by Ms. Powell can be seen in various schools and companies such as Maurice Bejart, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Boston Ballet, the stage play "The Lion King", San Francisco Ballet, The Julliard School, SUNY at Purchase, NYU, and Columbia University to name a few.
