Prague is a city that uniquely embodies the principal currents of the twentieth century political experience: nationalism, fascism, communism, and liberal capitalism. It is also a city whose writers and thinkers have been especially prominent seeking both to understand and to shape the culture in which they lived. It is also one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. In this cross-disciplinary course, we will approach Prague through a wide range of readings: academic, political, philosophical, and literary - each in their own way reflecting something of its experience of the last century. Texts will include works by creative writers and philosophers, as well as historical and cultural analyses and contemporary political writings. Whilst in Prague, we will visit many of the major sites associated with its recent history, experience some of its rich contemporary life, and participate in seminars led by local academics, journalists, film-makers and cultural critics. John Boughton and Shirley Peroutka will direct this program. Tentative dates are May 25 to June 15, 2007.
This course is particularly relevant to students of History, Communication and Media Studies, Politics, and International Relations; however, students of any discipline may apply provided they have completed at least one semester of college and have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA or special permission of the instructors. Applications from students who have taken the spring semester courses, HIS 294 Twentieth Century Prague or Com 335 International Mass Media, will be given preference. Students who have not participated in these preparatory courses will be expected to demonstrate a prior understanding of Prague’s culture through a written paper, and all students will be required to write a paper reflecting research and knowledge gained through their visit.
