Laptop Battery Recalls

Release date: August 17, 2006 |

A limited number of batteries in use with various Apple and Dell Laptop models are being recalled.  Apple and Dell are taking a proactive approach and recalling and replacing all batteries from specific production runs.

In cooperation with the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and other regulatory agencies worldwide, Dell announced on 08/14/06 the voluntary recall of approximately 4.1 million Dell-branded lithium-ion batteries with cells manufactured by Sony.  Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could cause a risk of fire.

Dell is working diligently with us to identify and locate any potentially affected batteries within our install base.  As we prepare the replacement program, we highly recommend that staff, faculty and students take advantage of the following site: www.dellbatteryprogram.com to understand if your battery is affected.

Apple is also voluntarily recalling affected batteries and has initiated a worldwide exchange program to provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge.  Please visit https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/index.html to find out more information about this program and to see if your battery is affected.

If you would like assistance, please contact the Help Desk via email at helpdesk@goucher.edu.  Please include the serial number of the battery in your email so that we may confirm the recall status.  You will need to remove your battery to locate the serial number.

If a battery is affected, you may continue to use the notebook computers safely by turning the system off, ejecting the battery, and using the AC adapter and power cord to power the system until the replacement battery is received.
