Lisa Weiss is Associate Professor and Chair of the Music Department at Goucher College, Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to chairing the department, she teaches piano, directs the student chamber music seminar and co-directs the student opera production company, serving as vocal coach, accompanist, and "orchestra" for the productions. She received a Faculty Merit Award for Distinguished Achievement at Goucher in 2004. Ms. Weiss’ concert career began at age seven as soloist with the Boston Pops, performing Haydn’s D Major Concerto. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University, a Masters in Music from the Yale School of Music, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Peabody Conservatory, Johns Hopkins University, where she studied with Leon Fleisher. Her other main teachers were Russell Sherman and the eminent composer, Leon Kirchner. She made her New York debut in 1986, playing Bach’s Third Partita, the Copland Sonata and the Liszt Sonata. Of her performance, the New York Times’ Wil Crutchfield wrote, "uncommonly thoughtful, detailed, imaginative…a musician worth attention and able to hold it." An avid promoter of new music, Ms. Weiss released her first CD, "Millenium Crossing", on Capstone Records, in March 2004, featuring contemporary works for solo piano by Italian composers Curt Cacioppo and Marino Baratello. For the past four years she has been performing solo and chamber music recitals in Italy, including a five-city CD promotional tour in October 2004. Last March, she was artist in residence at the Stephen Wise School for Performing Arts in Los Angeles, California. In Baltimore, she was most recently heard as pianist for L.A. composer Russell Steinberg’s "Stories From My Favorite Planet – A Musical Tribute to Journalist Daniel Pearl" at Goucher College in conjunction with the International Daniel Pearl Music Days Week. In November 2005, she was in residence at the Agder Conservatory in Norway, where she presented a solo recital and master class. Ms. Weiss lives in Lutherville, Maryland, with her husband, Howie Lee Weiss, painter and MICA Professor of Art, and their sixteen year old son, Billie. They are members of Baltimore Hebrew Congregation.
