eRecruiting.com
eRecruiting is an online service for Goucher students and alums to access full-time and part-time jobs, and internship listings.  This database is sponsored by the CDO.

The National Aquarium in Baltimore
The National Aquarium, located in the heart of Baltimore's Inner Harbor, has internship opportunities available throughout the year.  Students must volunteer 120 hours per semester and can choose to work with animals, plants, community affairs, conservation, education, development, information technology, marketing, media relations, or training.  Deadlines to apply: November 1 for winter and spring semesters, March 1 for summer, May 1 for fall semester.

Wolf Trap: Foundation for the Performing Arts
Wolf Trap’s Internship Program provides project-based training and experience to approximately 40 interns annually. Interns become integral members of the staff working side-by-side with professionals producing, promoting and administrating all aspects of the performing arts. Wolf Trap has a variety of different internships offered in the following departments: grant writing, graphic design, web communications, public relations, etc. Internships are part time (maximum of 24 hours per week) and 12 weeks in duration for fall, spring and summer.

Art on Purpose*
Art on Purpose interns will advise and mentor Baltimore City middle school and high school students in exploring the relationship between their art and their city. The internship includes working on several summer projects that would include (but not be limited to) the following tasks: art handling, installation and de-installation of shows, promotion, and staffing events. Art with a Heart*
Art with a Heart brings visual art to disadvantaged families and children in the Baltimore area, including those with learning or physical disabilities. The goal is for participants to build self-confidence and creativity through self-expression.  

School 33 Art Center
Interns at School 33, a program of the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts, assist with arts education programs, exhibitions and graphic design about 14 hours a week. The organization provides opportunities and education for area artists through exhibitions, classes, workshops, programs and events. Interns should be familiar with software such as Adobe Creative Suite and be self-directed.

Maryland Art Place
MAP is a nonprofit devoted to contemporary arts located in the Inner Harbor. In addition to a gallery, MAP  produces performances and the Maryland Visual Artists’ Registry. They host internships throughout the year for students interested in hands-on experience in the arts. Tasks may include gallery preparation/installation, Registry maintenance, data entry, research, administrative support and assistance with gallery receptions.

Maryland Citizens for the Arts/MCA Foundation
MCA seeks students looking for a serious internship in arts advocacy. Especially needed is an intern to assist with the Maryland Arts Day Conference to be held February 9, 2010 in Annapolis and to assist with advocacy efforts for the 2010 legislative session. MD Arts Day draws 500 people involved in the arts for the dual purpose of showing support for the arts to elected officials and of participating in professional development workshops. Current initiatives include the Emerging Arts Advocates and Local Arts Activists Teams. To apply, send an email of interest and let them know about your career interests and how this internship fits in as well as the days/times you are available each week and the dates you would like to complete the internship.

New York Foundation for the Arts
NYC based arts organizations post internship and job opportunities on this site.  Most opportunities are museum and gallery related.  Free to register.

Walters Art Museum*
Baltimore's Walters Art Museum, located in Mount Vernon, provides both paid and unpaid internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate-level students.  The competitive paid internship takes place each summer, the deadline for which is in February.  Unpaid internships are available year-round.  The deadlines are as follows: for fall-- July; for January term-- October; spring-- November; summer-- April.

Baltimore Museum of Art*
Another great Baltimore arts institution, the BMA lists employment openings on this site.

Kennedy Center
About 20 students and recent graduates pursuing performing arts management and/or arts education intern at the famed Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. each semester.  Internships are full-time and last three to four months; interns receive a stipend of $225 a week.  The deadlines are as follows: for fall-- June; for winter/spring-- October; summer-- March.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra*
Part-time internships in arts administration at the BSO include public relations, development and special event planning.

Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance
GBCA lists jobs, internships, volunteer opportunities and events related to the arts.

Wide Angle Youth Media*
This Baltimore City non-profit organization connects youth with education in media arts, including photography and videography.  They rely on dedicated interns to assist with their programming.

Americans for the Arts
A job bank with nationwide internship opportunities.

American Association of Museums
The American Association of Museums Job Headquarters allows job seekers to browse open positions at member museums or to post their resumes. 

Smithsonian Institution
Details about the Smithsonian Institution's selective internship program, including locations and dates, can be found here.  A few tips for applying to the Smithsonian Institution's internship programs: some museum experience is very helpful; internships are less competitive during the fall and spring and are rare during the winter; apply three months in advance; deadlines are generally 7/15 for the fall, 10/15 for the spring and 2/15 for the summer.

Smithsonian Alternative Winter Break Program
The Alternative Winter Break Program provides an opportunity for students located in the DC area during the winter break to spend time at the Museum contributing to the on-going activities of the NMNH community. Project focus and intensity varies greatly. An intern can work 1-5 weeks and should contact Mary Sangrey, the Head of the Office of Academic Services at sangreym@si.edu if interested.

National Museum of American History
The Smithsonian's American History branch offers about 150 internship positions each year.  See tips listed under Smithsonian Institution.

National Museum of Natural History
The Natural History branch of the Smithsonian also hosts about 150 interns each year. See tips listed under Smithsonian Institution.

Nana Projects
The Nana Projects internships are studio-based informal training and work experience.The positions also include support staff tasks for current projects and may include work as technical crew, workshop assistant and light office work, dependent on current productions. World Trade Center Institute: Maryland's Premier Global Business Partner
Internships at the WTCI offer practical hands-on business experience and unparalleled networking opportunities. All interns will complete a semester project, which is presented to the WTCI staff at the end of the term. Internships are available in the following areas: Operations and Client Services, Business Development and Sales, International Visitors Program and Client Services, Marketing and Events, and Finance & IT. The Hunt Valley-based spice company seeks interns for their company, which was founded in 1889. Interested students should log onto their website, click on "Careers" in the bottom right corner, then search for "internship" in the job finder.

Communications/Media

Goucher Communications & Media Studies internships*

National Public Radio
Students interested in challenging internship opportunity can apply to work at NPR, the acclaimed producer/distributor of noncommerical radio, at their offices in Washington D.C. or Culver City, CA. Interns choose from about 50 different programs in broadcasting or support based on their interests and goals. Deadlines to apply are February 15 for a summer internship, July 15 for the fall and November 15 for winter/spring.

Academy of Television Arts & Sciences
This 6-8 week full-time, summer internship program in Hollywood provides undergraduates interested in pursuing a career in television with hands-on experience.  Interns must have a car and handle their own food, transportation and housing costs; however, a $4,000 stipend is awarded to each intern.  The deadline for this internship is generally in March.

Society of Professional Journalists
The SPJ site provides information about three internship programs as well as a handful of fellowships, scholarships and other resources for journalism students.

American Society of Newspaper Editors
Here you are able to search for newspaper internships by state, season, and type of work.  The site also includes a "career bank" and a discussion of why journalism is a worthwhile field.

Pennsylvania Newspaper Association
Their internship guide can be searched for daily or non-daily publications by city.

New Jersey Collegiate Press Association
This organization runs a summer internship program in which eight journalism students are placed at newspapers in New Jersey and receive $300 a week for their work; applications are due in November.  They also have a list of 128 newspaper internships and part-time jobs.

Dow Jones Newpaper Fund
This media company offers four summer internship programs: news copy editing, sports copy editing, online editing and business reporting.  Deadline for applications is November 1.

USA Today
USA Today's internships are conducted year-round at their offices in McLean, VA.

New Jersey Newspaper Foundation
Open only to New Jersey residents and students attending colleges in New Jersey, this organization accepts eight interns each summer.

TV Jobs

Entertainment Careers

Community & Leadership Internship Resources

Breakthrough Collaborative
This national nonprofit is ranked as a Top Ten Internship site by the Princeton Review. By pairing college and high school students with high-potential, low-income middle schoolers, Breakthrough Collaborative builds upon a role model relationship to show that it is cool to be smart. Their motto is "students teaching students." Success rates are high, as the majority of student participants go on to pursue higher education and mentors often go into a career in education. With 30 sites nationwide, intern teachers can choose from locations such as Washington D.C., Long Island, New York, or Philadelphia.

Caring for Kaela (CFK) Internship
CFK is an all volunteer international children's organization whose vision is to empower the lives of destitute children in Chad, Central Africa. As an intern, you will help write international development grants to fund programs in Africa in the areas of education to employment for orphans and vulnerable children, community capacity-building, peace-building and international policy and advocacy. Governor's Summer Internship Program
The internship is an opportunity for undergraduates from various majors to build valuable skills, explore career choices within branches of Maryland state government. The program offers paid internship opportunities to college juniors and seniors attending Maryland institutions. Participating interns work throughout the summer and receive a $3000 stipend. International Rescue Committee Internship
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergancy relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. An internship with the IRC will provide you with an opportunity to work directly with our Case Management and Resettlement Service Teams. Insight Collaborative
Insight Collaborative is a nonprofit organization committed to resolving conflict and improving relationships around the world. Greenpeace
Greenpeace interns perform a variety of tasks, depending on location, year, and interests surrounding environmental protection-- these include student networking, action units, grassroots organizing, oceans, forests, IT, and fundraising. Internships take place in San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Washington D.C.

Greenpeace Organizing Term
A semester-long advanced training program for student activists.  This program is active, hands-on, and focused on developing leaders in environmental activism.

Sustainable Business "Green" Jobs
This sustainable-only job bank lists both internship and volunteer opportunities as well as full- and part-time jobs.

Baltimore Green Works
In addition to planning an annual Green Week, this nonprofit organizes free and low-cost events year-round, such as the Ecoball and Sustainable Speaker series. Interns help the organization, which has only one full-time staff member, with daily operations for their environmental endeavors.

Marshy Point Nature Center
This 500-acre nature reserve in Baltimore County seeks interns to assist with programming, event planning, and exhibits. Students should be interested in the outdoors/natural sciences and have solid communication skills.

Maryland Conservation/Maryland League of Conservation Voters*
One of the state's leading advocacy organizations, this organization works to pass pro-conservation laws at the state level and engage voters about conservation issues year-round. They are looking for interns to work on the Southern Maryland Global Warming Campaign, the Baltimore County Connections Project, web communications, and political/legislative campaigns.

The Nature Conservancy

Foreign Language/Multicultural Internship Resources

Hispanic Apostolate--Esperanza Center*
Interning at the Esperanza Center will expose students to different Spanish-speaking cultures and the many gifts, talents and contributions these cultures bring to ours. There are three main areas of focus that interns could work in at the Center, including teaching English as a second language, working in the health care office, or providing support in the immigration department with more legal issues. Education Based Latino Outreach (EBLO)
EBLO, serving Baltimore's Hispanic community since 1980, relies on volunteers and interns to operate its Escuela Sabitina (Saturday School), Mi Segunda Casa (My Second Home) after school program for elementary students, Cruzando el Puente (Crossing the Bridge) middle school after school program, Entermos al Futuro (Digital Village) computer lab, and annual LatinoFest each summer.

CASA de Maryland
This Silver Spring-based advocacy organization is seeking interns for a variety of programs and projects, ranging from graphic design to English tutoring and marketing to legal expertise. Volunteers serve at their Baltimore or Silver Spring locations.

American Friends Service Committee*
The Middle Atlantic chapter of this Quaker organization offers several programs in Baltimore: Maryland Peace with Justice, Baltimore Urban Peace, Youth Empowerment through Conflict Resolution, and Project VOICE. Their goal is to listen to those in the communities they serve, and work with them to build on their strengths and address their needs. MORA-MD Office for Refugees & Asylees
At the Maryland Office for Refugees and Asylees (MORA) interns learn about domestic workings of refugee resettlement, a program with international reach and local implications, one that gives victims of intimidation and violence throughout the world a new start in American communities. FIRN-Resources for the Foreign Born
FIRN is a great opportunity for students to intern at if they wish to increase their foreign language skills, especially in conversation. Students interact with foreign born individuals and gain a greater understanding of different cultures. FIRN believes community is stronger and richer because of its diversity, and values the differences of cultures and peoples. FIRN has a variety of opportunities and tasks for its interns. American Political Science Association
This site, devoted to "networking a world of scholars," offers resources and links to political science internships. 

Economic Strategy Institute
Selective fall, spring and summer internships at ESI give students a chance to serve as research assistants on ongoing projects at the Institute.

Federal Bureau of Investigation
The FBI also offers an extensive internship program.  Be sure to note the deadlines for these as well-- for a summer internship, apply by September.

For students with Arabic language skills interested in security studies, the Homeland Security Internship is a great option.  The intensive, eight-week program is conducted at FBI or Homeland Security Headquarters; interns receive 12 college credits and have all expenses paid.

Maryland Department of Transportation Internship Program
Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Fellows are given the opportunity to see the rewards and challenges of working within the field of transportation. Interns gain valuable exposure to the tremendous workforce behind MDOT while developing policy papers in teams that address significant issues facing MDOT today. Participating students earn $3,500 during their 8 week internships. Maryland General Assembly
Interns must have the approval of the college/university sponsoring professor to participate. You must have at least a 3.0 GPA but a student with a lower GPA may still participate if recommended by a sponsor and accepted by the intern coordinator. U.S. Department of State
The deadlines for the State Department internship program come quite early.  To apply for a summer internship, the deadline is November; for fall, the deadline is February; for spring, the deadline is July.

History Internship Resources

National Park Service & National Council for Preservation Education
The National Park Service, in partnership with the National Council for Preservation Education, offers historic preservation internships.  The program is designed to allow students in historic preservation programs and allied disciplines to gain an awareness of National Park Service cultural resource management activities and to provide an opportunity to work alongside professionals in the field of historic preservation.  A variety of positions in preservation and related fields are being offered at the National Park Service and partnering agencies. 

Lost Towns Project*
Dedicated to unearthing the "lost towns" of colonial-era Anne Arundel County, Lost Towns Project interns get hands-on experience with historical research, archaeological field work, and/or laboratory methods.  Work is conducted in labs and fieldwork in the Annapolis area with flexible scheduling.

Hampton National Historical Site*
The largest house in the United States when it was completed in 1790, the Hampton National Historical Site is a historical treasure literally across the street from Goucher. They seek interns interested in art, history, agriculture/horticulture, preservation, policy work, publications and visitor services. Operated by the National Parks Service, interning at Hampton is a great way to learn more about work in the federal government.

Kennedy Krieger Institute*
Baltimore's specialists in developmental disabilities, KKI has hosted many Goucher students in the past. Behavioral Psychology offers many internship options but students can intern for other departments in KKI as well.  Students should look at least 3 months in advance to apply for field placement or practicum in Behavioral Psychology.  Student volunteers cannot be called “interns” as this title is held for doctoral students. National Institute of Mental Health
A federal mental health program through the National Institute of Health, this site lists job and internship opportunities in many organizations.

Sheppard Pratt Hospital*
The Sheppard Pratt Health System is a very active, private setting for behavioral health treatment located in Towson. It is recommended to allow 3-4 months for the application process, which includes an interview, background check, orientation and TB test.  Students are placed based on their interests, availability and fit with the unit.  Only two interns work in a unit at one time.  Reliability is a must, and experience with children is a plus for students interested in pediatric programs. For questions or more information, please contact Shannon Walsh at 410-938-4850 or fill out the volunteer information form on the website.

Undergraduate Psychology Summer Internship at Pace University
The goal of the training program is to provide summer interns with the opportunity to experience the diverse functions of a professional psychologist in a university counseling center. This opportunity includes scholarly research, outreach and consultation program development as well as some clinical work. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications starting November 30th, 2009 with the final deadline on January 16, 2010. Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program is an opportunity for undergraduates from various majors to build valuable skills, explore career choices within the nonprofit sector and gain experience managing and leading public service organizations. The Leadership Program offers paid internship opportunities in the non-profit sector to college junior and seniors attending Maryland institutions. Participating interns work throughout the summer and receive a $3000 stipend. You Are Never Alone (YANA)*
YANA is a shelter that reaches out to women and girls involved in prostitution and human trafficking survivors. They conduct street outreach, hospitality, trauma counseling/therapy, case management and advocacy. The downtown Baltimore organization has worked with Goucher volunteers in many capacities.

House of Ruth*
The House of Ruth is one of the nation's leading domestic violence centers, helping thousands of women and children to find safety and shelter. Volunteers at House of Ruth can work on the B-More Bags project, providing child care, serving as a hotline counselor, or a legal intern/advocate.
