SERVE students work with Sandtown Habitat for Humanity in west Baltimore City. They become acquainted with the organization and the city and will enjoy the opportunity to work alongside faculty, staff, and fellow first-year students. Habitat volunteers participate in clearing out abandoned homes and yards, demolition, masonry, drywall, painting, landscaping, and in foundational work such as loading, unloading, and organizing materials. Participants will spend two days in Sandtown, returning to campus in the evenings for dinner and follow-up activities. All students will be assigned to a common section of Connections (the required first-year course). Students will also have the opportunity to continue working with the service-learning project. Cost of the program is $75 per student, with openings for 15 students.
