The Chengdu program is ideal for students who are interested in experiencing life in one of the most ancient, culturally fascinating and authentic places in all of China. Chengdu is also one of the most important economic centers and transportation and communication hubs in the country. The program offers the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese, a language which is becoming increasingly popular in the global marketplace. Mandarin is the official/standard dialect used in China, and Chengdu is a great place to practice Mandarin outside of class. Studying in China offers you a unique opportunity to experience one of the world's most ancient civilizations while living in the one of the world's fastest growing major economies.

Academically, this program offers a high quality educational experience with a focus on either Chinese Language or Chinese Studies. If you choose to focus on intensive language study, you may also take one or two elective courses such as Tai Chi, Chinese culture, history or Chinese cuisine. The intensive language approach allows you to complete up to one and a half years of Chinese language coursework in only one semester. Students who would rather focus on Chinese studies may select from several courses taught in English. Students choosing this second option must take the required Elementary Chinese Language I course and may take additional elective courses in Chinese history, literature, government and politics, culture and society.

However, the academic courses are only part of the value of a semester or yearlong program. Participation in formal and informal activities, such as field trips to sites of historical and cultural interest, museums, weekend trips to the mountains and other cultural immersion activities form an integral part of the program. The Chengdu program has a Resident Director who is responsible for the USAC office abroad and the overall operations of the program: securing appropriate student housing, hiring outstanding faculty, organizing exciting field trips and optional tours as well as overseeing your general well-being. Wentao Song, a Chinese native, is the Resident Director for the Chengdu program. She earned a Masters degree from Sichuan University and is fluent in Chinese and English. Wentao has over 10 years of experience working with international students. She will meet the group flight at the airport, take you to your housing, provide an on-site orientation and assistance while you are on the program.
