Welcome to the Student Health Services Web Page. Good health means having a full measure of physical, emotional, and social vitality. Goucher College Student Health Services (SHS) is organized to assist you in maintaining healthful well-being. To do so, we provide medical and emergency care throughout the academic year. In addition, we offer comprehensive educational services to maintain or improve your health.

Statement of Confidentiality

Patient confidentiality is important to us as well as to you. Your medical records will be seen only by those involved in providing care for you. Except in life-threatening situations, no information will be released without your oral/written permission.

You, the student, are our client. Information we receive in Student Health Services will not be released to your parents or other offices on the Goucher campus without your written consent.

Student employees of Student Health Services do not have access to your medical records. All student employees are trained annually on the importance of sensitivity to the privacy issues of students visiting the Health Center; each student employee signs a Confidentiality Statement and Agreement.

Student's Right of Privacy

Student employees employed by the Health and Counseling Center at Goucher College have signed a confidentiality agreement that prohibits the student employee from directly or indirectly communicating any health related information to anyone other than their supervisor.

Student employees do not have access to information within a patient's medical or counseling records.

All student employees are obligated to be compliant with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and understand their obligation to comply with its terms.

Any student may request to speak with a Health and Counseling Center staff member rather than a student employee at any time during their visit.

The Goucher Student Health Center is an outpatient facility located in Heubeck Hall.

Student Health Services is open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m, Monday through Friday and is closed on the weekends. Services will be available to students beginning on opening day in August through May 31st when the college is open.

Services

Primary Care

Acute or chronic general medical services are provided by either a part-time physician or a nurse practitioner. Consultations with, and referral to, appropriate specialists are available as needed.

Sexual Health Care for Men and Women

Confidential testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases is provided. Literature, programs and counseling are available. Testing for HIV is provided throughout the year. Hepatitis B vaccine is available.

Student Health Services makes available the "morning after pill", provides comprehensive contraception options and confidential pregnancy testing to women students.

Lesbian, bisexual and gay health care concerns, as with all individual visits to the health center, are treated with confidential sensitivity.

Allergy Injections

Students may, if referred by their physician, have allergy injections by appointment if appropriate serum and instructions are provided.

Routine Physical Exams

Routine physical exams are performed at a reasonable cost.

Self-Care

The Self-Care Center, located in the Health Center, is available from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Simple instructions and materials, including some over-the-counter medications, are provided for colds, headaches, upset stomach, minor cuts and scrapes, and musculoskeletal pain.

Equipment

Certain medical equipment is available such as crutches, ace bandages, and ice packs at a reasonable cost.

Eligibility

All full time Goucher students, residential and commuting, may use Student Health Services.

Undergraduate students pay an annual fee that entitles them to unlimited office visits at no extra cost. Graduate students may pay the annual fee or choose to pay a modest fee for each office visit.

Use of Student Health and Counseling Services is not related to the Goucher-sponsored insurance policy.

Fees

The health fee is mandatory for all full-time undergraduate and post bac students and optional for full-time graduate students. If graduate students choose not to pay the health fee, they are eligible for services at the Health Center only on a fee-for-service basis. Prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals are dispensed at low cost to the students.

Payment may be made at the time of service by cash, check or student One Card.

Medical Excuses

Health and Counseling services are offered to students on a confidential basis. The staff does not issue medical excuses from academic obligations. Course requirements and attendance are academic matters between the student and the faculty. The responsibility for class attendance and performance rests primarily with the student. The Student Health and Counseling staff do not excuse students from classes or academic work. If a student authorizes it, the staff will verify that a student has been treated at the Student Health and Counseling Service. Students may sign an authorization form at the time of the visit which allows faculty members to verify that the student was seen at the Health and Counseling Service.

Students who miss class because of illness or other emergencies should contact their faculty by telephone or e-mail as soon as possible to make the necessary arrangements to complete missed assignments. Faculty members who wish to verify that a student was treated at the Student Health and Counseling Services may contact the health service staff.

In the event of a serious illness or injury requiring hospitalization or extended absence from classes the Dean of Students should be notified. The Dean's office will assist the student or their family in notifying the faculty.

Patient's Rights and Responsiblities

As a patient of Goucher College Student Health Services, you have choices, rights, and responsibilities.

Admission Requirements

In order to provide the best possible medical care to our students, we require the completion of the Medical History and Examination form and the Immunization Record.

The physical examination may be completed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant of your choice. If the medical history is completed before the physical examination, the health practitioner will be better able to evaluate any condition that could affect individuals' overall health care needs.

The Goucher College immunization requirement follows the guidelines set by the American College Health Association and the Centers for Disease Control. Since immunization requirements may vary from state to state; we recommend that your health care provider review our form carefully, assess your current status, and update immunizations as necessary to fulfill our requirements.

The State of Maryland requires undergraduate students living in residence halls to receive meningitis vaccine or sign a waiver that the individual has received and reviewed the information and has chosen not to be vaccinated.

All incoming students must complete and return these forms to Student Health Services at least two weeks before arriving on campus. Students who fail to return their forms, or who are not in compliance with our immunization requirement, will not be allowed to register or receive their room keys.

The above forms are only completed the first year of admission to Goucher College.

Health insurance information must be provided at the beginning of each school year. If the student health insurance offered by the college is waived, the student must provide proof of coverage by another insurance company. The students should carry an insurance card or copy of one in their wallet.

In certain instances, the college may require emergency medical or mental health evaluation of a student. If you choose to waive the Goucher insurance you should be certain that your policy will provide coverage at St. Joseph's or Greater Baltimore Medical Center in an emergency.

Policy on Immunizations

Goucher College has developed the following pre-entrance immunization requirements, based on recommendations of the American College Health Association, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Center for Disease Control and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The student's immunization form is due prior to registration.

1. Immunizations required of all undergraduate, Goucher II and graduate students taking nine or more credits, as well as students in the post-baccalaureate premed program:

  • Two doses of MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella combined)
  • Antibody blood titer tests will be accepted as proof of immunity in lieu of the above vaccinations.
  • One Tetanus Diphtheria booster (Td) within the past ten years or Tdap;
  • PPD skin test for tuberculosis: required within two years of admission;
  • Chest X-ray (if history of positive PPD)

2. Immunizations required of all undergraduate students residing in residence halls

 Maryland state law requires every student who resides in the on-campus residence halls to be vaccinated against meningococcal disease or to decline this requirement by submitting a written waiver stating that he or she has received the information and has chosen not to be vaccinated against the disease.

3. Immunizations recommended (not required) for all students

  • Three doses of Hepatitis B Vaccine
  • Two doses of Hepatitis A Vaccine
  • Varicella antibody titers (if no history of having chicken pox). If varicella titers are negative, we recommend the varicella vaccine
  • Three doses of Human Papillomavirus vaccine
