Goucher Featured in 2009 Edition of "The Best 368 Colleges"
Release date: July 29, 2008
With its “first-rate” academic programs, high “green” rating, and “laid back” and accepting community, Goucher College has been included in the 2009 edition of The Princeton Review’s book The Best 368 Colleges.
Instead of ranking schools based solely on academics, The Princeton Review tallies ranking lists in 62 categories based on a survey of 120,000 students (about 325 per campus on average) who attend the colleges that are included. The 80-question survey asked students to rate their schools on topics that range from best professors, administration, campus food, student body political leanings, race/class relations, and sports interests.
Goucher ranked No. 19 on the list of institutions where classroom discussions are encouraged. There was also strong consensus among survey responses that “Goucher students spend lots of time in class and studying hard,” and the college’s professors are consistently described as “amazing people and great mentors.” Students also praised Goucher’s “education without boundaries” philosophy and its “innovative and exciting” study-abroad requirement.
The Princeton Review’s guide additionally includes a compilation of rating scores in eight categories based on institutional data collected about the schools, feedback from students attending them, and its evaluators’ visits to schools. The opinions of independent college counselors, students, and parents are also considered in the ratings. Among the eight categories is a new rating based on the schools’ environmentally related practices, policies, and course offerings. Goucher received a 97 percent “green” rating.
The Princeton Review only includes 15 percent of the 2,500 four-year colleges in the United States for evaluation in the guide.
