Goucher Participates in Maryland Independent Higher Education Day
Release date: February 09, 2012
Goucher College will participate in the annual Maryland Independent Higher Education Day, which recognizes the vital role Maryland's independent colleges and universities play in the state.
The Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA), of which Goucher is a member, will bring about 200 college students and administrators from across the state to Annapolis on February 9 for a day of special activities, including a student briefing and student visits with state legislators and elected officials. Students and college officials will also attend the MICUA Presidents' Award ceremony, during which Maryland State Treasurer Nancy Kopp will be honored for "outstanding leadership on behalf of higher education in Maryland."
Private colleges and universities have been educating young men and women in Maryland for 230 years, and Governor Martin J. O'Malley has commended these independent institutions for their significant contributions to higher education and recognized the broad public benefits they provide by contributing to social mobility, economic prosperity, workforce development, scientific discoveries, global competitiveness, civic participation, and community service.
Maryland's institutions of higher education, public and private, produce the knowledge and conduct the research that underpin the state's economy. Every year, MICUA colleges and universities serve 63,000 students, award about 30% of all degrees conferred by Maryland four-year institutions, and attract $2.4 billion in research grants.
Established in 1971, MICUA provides services to meet the needs of independent higher education and fosters cooperative efforts among its member institutions and all segments of higher education. MICUA seeks to inform the broader public about its member institutions and the vital importance of independent colleges and universities to the future of the state and nation.
Member institutions are Goucher College, Capitol College, Hood College, the Johns Hopkins University, Loyola University Maryland, Maryland Institute College of Art, McDaniel College, Mount St. Mary's University, Notre Dame of Maryland University, St. John's College, Sojourner-Douglass College, Stevenson University, Washington Adventist University, and Washington College. Ner Israel Rabbinical College and St. Mary's Seminary & University are affiliate members.
