Peggy Bulger to Give Keynote at Graduate Programs Commencement

Margaret Anne "Peggy" Bulger, former director of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, will be the keynote speaker at Goucher College's graduate programs Commencement.
The ceremony will be held Sunday, August 5, at 3 p.m. in Kraushaar Auditorium and will honor the achievements of the graduates enrolled in programs through the Robert S. Welch Center for Graduate and Professional Studies at Goucher College.
As director of the American Folklife Center in Washington, DC, from 1999 to 2011, Bulger oversaw the largest ethnographic archive in the nation. The center preserves and presents American folklife by collecting, maintaining, and making accessible multi-format folklife, ethnomusicology, and oral history collections of national and international significance, as well as producing media programs, publications, symposia, concerts, lectures, exhibits, and other on-site and online public programs.
An early pioneer in the field of public folklore, Burger began her career when she was chosen to serve as the Florida state folk arts coordinator in 1975 and then became administrator of the Florida Folklife Program in 1976. After creating the Florida Folklife Collection and helping to establish folklife apprenticeship programs, educational videos and publications, workshops, and exhibits, Burger left the Florida Folklife Program in 1989 to work as the folk arts director and senior program officer for the Southern Arts Federation in Atlanta, where she developed folk arts programs in nine Southern states.
In 1999, she was named director of the American Folklife Center—only the second person to hold the post since the center's creation in 1976. She retired in 2011 to pursue personal projects.
Bulger serves on the U.S. delegation to the World Intellectual Property Organization's Intergovernmental Subcommittee on Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge, and Folklofe, and she is a member of the Organization for American States' Committee on Culture. Additionally, she is the author of South Florida Folklife (1994), with Tina Bucuvalas and Stetson Kennedy, and the editor of the Musical Roots of the South (1992).
She holds a B.A. in fine arts from the State University of New York at Albany, an M.A. in folk studies from Western Kentucky University, and a doctorate in folklore and folklife from the University of Pennsylvania.
The Robert S. Welch Center for Graduate and Professional Studies at Goucher College offers limited-residency programs for students pursuing a Master of Arts in Arts Administration, Master of Arts in Historic Preservation, and Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction. Designed for working adults, classes are offered primarily online with a required two-week, on-campus residency. Because of the flexibility the programs provide, students enroll from all parts of the country and often from other countries.
Goucher also recently launched two new limited-residency programs that are the only ones of their kind in the country.
The Master of Arts in Cultural Sustainability program brings together tools from anthropology, history, communications, business and management, linguistics, and activism, and teaches students how to sustain cultural traditions in an era of increasing homogeneity and globalization.
The Master of Arts in Digital Arts (MADArts) allows students who are interested in music, digital culture, and media to create a marketable body of work in collaboration with well-known, working digital artists, and it teaches them about the business of digital art so they can finance, advertise, and manage their careers.
The Master of Education program offers specializations in athletic programs and leadership, education for at-risk students, middle school education, reading instruction, school mediation, school improvement leadership, and urban and diverse learners.
The Master of Arts in Teaching is a certification program designed to prepare graduates with no teaching background for careers in elementary, middle, or special education.
