Goucher's Theater Department is presenting a production of Irish playwright Marina Carr's By the Bog of Cats as this year's senior project. Performances will run Wednesday, April 18, through Sunday, April 22, at 8 p.m. in the college's Mildred Dunnock Theatre.

Tickets are $9 for general admission and $5 for all Goucher students, faculty, and staff with a valid college ID. Tickets should be claimed at least 15 minutes before the show starts.

Set in the Irish Midlands, By the Bog of Cats is a modern reconceptualization of Euripides' classical Greek tragedy Medea. Like Medea, By the Bog of Cats explores themes of love, loss, and the consequences of betrayal—but it doesn't stop there.

By the Bog of Cats is a play about a community of people fighting to retain their individuality, autonomy, and sense of purpose in a rapidly changing world. Pulled by opposing forces and desires, characters struggle to keep their balance, teetering between modernity and tradition, alliance and ostracism, and agonizing love and murderous rage.

Allison Campbell, theatre professor and department chair, directs the show. In addition to the seven senior theatre majors and minors, the cast includes other members of the Goucher community as singers and dancers.

At Goucher College, the senior project is the capstone course for students majoring and minoring in theatre. It is an intensive, integrated, collaborative process that spans two semesters. In the fall semester, senior theatre students meet in a seminar setting to study, discuss, research, explore, and analyze the play. In the spring, the play is produced for the mainstage. In addition to performing in the show, each senior fills a production role. This year, majors and minors are lighting designers, dramaturgs, set designers, prop mistresses, hair and makeup designers, movement consultants, and publicists.
