"Animal Farm," the Musical

Release date: November 04, 2010

In a rare collaboration, Goucher College's Music and Theatre departments are presenting Animal Farm, a musical adaptation by Peter Hall, Richard Peaslee, and Adrian Mitchell of the English Nation Theatre of George Orwell's classic novel. Performances will be held Thursday, November 4, through Saturday, November 6, at 8 p.m. in Mildred Dunnock Theater.

Tickets are $10 general admission and $6 for Goucher community members with ID. For tickets, call the theater's box office at 410-337-6512 or go to http://www.goucher.edu/x38171.xml.

"This production examines the slippery slope of political compromise regarding ideals, and by pointing out how fear is used to control popular opinion, the work makes Orwell's 1946 novel Animal Farm relevant for today's audiences," says Michael Bigelow Dixon, assistant professor and director of Animal Farm.

Goucher's presentation of Animal Farm features 16 student actors; 20 additional student production personnel; and a five-person professional orchestra featuring unusual instrumentation, including marimba, kettle drums, tuba and euphonium. The production's music co-directors are music faculty Lisa Weiss and Richard Hartzell.

Goucher's October 28-30 performances of Animal Farm were well-attended.
