Natural Hair Project

Goucher Students Victoria Awkward, Meagan McIntosh, Nathaniel Magloire, and Harmony Jackson collaborate on the Natural Hair Project.

With a grant from Goucher Social Justice Committee, students engaged in a project to celebrate natural Black hair, and contribute to the social conversation around the topic. The project team was:

Victoria Awkward - Photographer, Interviewer and natural hair Project Coordinator

Harmony Jackson - Photographer, Interviewer and Workshop Instructor

Nathaniel Magloire - Photographer

Meagan Mcintosh - Natural Hair Project Coordinator and Interviewer

With a series of interviews and a photo essay, the student team discussed what natural hair means to some of the Black students on campus, and some of the wider social implications and history thereof. Students talked about visibility and representation in the media, and how they felt that influences the Black community. Full interviews, photos, and more info can be found on the project website: The Natural Hair Project.

An exhibit with photos and interview excerpts is up in the library, in the Reading Lounge 4th Floor. Ungar Athenaeum.
