Providing References for Students
As a faculty member, one of the most important things you do is to serve as a reference for your students and alumni. This is not an easy task. Two things you should think about when writing a letter or providing a personal reference are FERPA and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Information about how FERPA can have an impact on this process can be found on the Registrar’s website.
You must also be aware of the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act when you are writing a letter on behalf of a student that you know has a disability, including a disability that you may have accommodated in your classroom. For a good discussion of this issue see the website of Dickenson College and the website of the University of Alabama.

You should feel free to contact our office if you have questions about either of these issues.
