Leading the Nation in Innovation

Goucher is preparing its students for the jobs of the future — jobs that don't even exist yet. We do that by helping our students develop skills to last a lifetime. And we were recently named the 8th most innovative college in the country by U.S. News & World Report because people are taking notice. We're also one of only 40 select colleges listed in the well-known guide Colleges That Change Lives by the same name. Goucher is a place where faculty really care, everyone studies abroad, and there are plenty of opportunities to put your education into action.

“Professors are there for me and push me, but they are also there to talk to me if I’m having problems, and they’ll help me improve. Their goal is to make you succeed. It’s a good place to learn how to go off on your own.” Maafio Appiah-Padi was looking for small liberal arts school with a strong study-abroad program and global focus, a track and field team, an economics major, and a peace studies program. After visiting Goucher, applying, and getting accepted, Appiah-Padi has found that the odds were definitely in her favor with her college search. Goucher delivers on all her requirements, and she is taking full advantage of the opportunities available to her here.

“For me, the vibe at Goucher was very welcoming, and the student body was really passionate, which is what I was looking for. It really encouraged me to get involved in things so early.” Right away he became an ambassador with the Office of Admissions and likes being able to help students have the same kind of ah-ha college tour experience he had here. He also joined the Orientation Committee — “I love having a hand in kick-starting other students’ college careers. I want to help them get involved early, too”.

“The Kratz Summer Fellowship enabled me to take my first step from my safe-but-insular college writing community into a real-world writing community, where I learned what it would take to make a full career out of writing. I decided that I wanted to be a writer when I was pretty young. I never really had any backup plan,” says Laura Tims, a former English major who now has a two-book contract with HarperCollins.

A Community That Cares

Our students care. That’s why they spent 34,000 hours last year working toward social justice. They’re not content to sit around and watch if there’s something they can do to help build stronger communities—and they develop important skills while they’re doing it. We’re active partners with multiple communities in the Greater Baltimore area. Our Goucher Prison Education Partnership recently received praise from U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. Whether it's tutoring children in Baltimore City, working toward a sustainable environment, or fighting food waste, Goucher students are working toward change. Which wrong do you want to right?
