MAAA News Story

Release date: November 14, 2011

The Master of Arts in Arts Administration (MAAA) is pleased to announce that Todd Hawkins and Crystal Benavides have been nominated to serve on the Emerging Leaders Council.  The Emerging Leaders Council (ELC) is an elected advisory body to Americans for the Arts and assists in developing programs and resources to identify, cultivate, and promote the next generation of arts leaders in America.

When asked why he wanted to serve on the council, Todd Hawkins (Goucher MAAA 2010) said "During my time at Goucher College, I had several opportunities to work with the Emerging Leaders Council and was able to witness first-hand their commitment to supporting the issues that EL's have. As a person from Oklahoma who has transplanted to NYC and as someone who works in public art by day and theatre by night, I believe I have a unique voice to bring to the table.  I want to use my voice to help the Emerging Leader Council fulfill its' mission to promote the growth, development and sustenance of emerging arts leaders nationwide."

Crystal Benavides, currently a first-year student, said of her nomination, "I would like to serve on the ELC to incorporate it into the landscape of Houston, and at the same time to bring an awareness of our EL issues into the national discussion.  During the 2011 Arts Advocacy Day I was surprised at the number of young arts administrators that came out to advocate for the first time. It felt like a significant moment for the EL's in my community and the impact that we can collectively have.  If selected, I believe that I can help increase advocacy and involvement in my community, and that our work in Texas can serve as a platform for national discussion."

Voting is open to all members of Americans for the Arts through November 21 and election results will be announced on December 12.  Go to:  http://artsusa.org/networks/emerging_leaders/about_us/council/voting/
