Jazz Plus
![]() |
Our supportive, professional faculty has crafted a comprehensive program focusing on jazz studies, enhanced by elective courses in other contemporary styles such as rock, funk, Latin, and hip-hop. The Jazz Plus program is both for jazz newcomers and for experienced players, ages 13-18. This program is a great opportunity for musicians who want to develop their skills as jazz musicians while also experiencing and developing other styles and interests. The curriculum includes jazz theory, jazz history, jazz styles, improvisation and rhythm training classes. Students are placed into various small combos based on their interest in addition to the All-Camp Band. All will perform in concert on the last day of the workshop. Private instrumental lessons are given to every student at least once per week including, but not limited to instruction on piano, guitar, bass, percussion, trumpet, sax, clarinet, trombone, euphonium, and flute. All instruments will be accommodated. Jeffrey Chappell and the jazz faculty also give an evening jazz concert for the students and their parents to provide inspiration for our young musicians.

Placement and Audition Information
Jazz Program Orientation and Placement Audition will be held on Sunday, July 7th at 2:30pm in Merrick Lecture Hall.
All jazz participants are required to attend so the program director can be informed of the student's interests, goals, and skill level.
The audition will be part interview, and part performance. Please come prepared to play one piece or excerpt of a piece no longer than 5 minutes in length on the instrument of your choice. Your selection may be in any style, not limited to jazz. Improvisation is optional. Your audition piece should show your highest level of ability on your instrument. So, come to impress!
