Education Without Boundaries

“I love the community aspect of Goucher,” says Daniel Amodeo, a senior history and political science major from New York City. “Goucher is a college of individuals. When you get involved in that, and when you interact with those individuals, you get to see so many sides of life in this small community that just amaze you. I love the people — learning from them and them learning from me.”

Daniel Amodeo

He has been able to interact with many members of the Goucher community and enhance campus life through his service as a community assistant, as president of the College Democrats, and as a member of the Student Government Association and other clubs and organizations.

He got involved with the College Democrats on campus during his freshman year and soon became the fundraising chair. He’s now serving his third term as president of the club.

As he got more involved with politics on campus, and as professors helped him become more aware about local and global current events, Amodeo started to rethink his initial intention of working toward becoming a high school history teacher. He says he has really been inspired by his fellow students, staff, and faculty, and it was these connections that really shifted his interest to politics and public service.

Amodeo has taken his passion and his ambitions into Baltimore’s politics as well.

He acted as the communications director for Andrew Belt’s campaign for the Maryland House of Delegates, and he recently interned with Maryland Congressman John Sarbanes on Capital Hill and in the district office in Towson. Both opportunities helped Amodeo to further his understanding of politics, and they enabled him to apply what he had learned in his classes and extracurriculars at Goucher to “real-life” scenarios.

Through his classes and his involvement on and off campus, Amodeo also has come to realize that there are many different ways in which he can serve his community. He views his work as a community assistant, for instance, as another form of public service.

He says being a CA – as well as taking part in the Goucher community in other capacities – has helped him realize the core values in his life, including his commitment to serving others. He hopes to continue giving back and sharing the blessings he feels he has been afforded.
