"Service is the rent you pay for room on this earth."

--Shirley Chisholm

Goucher College has a long-standing commitment to service in the community and is a founding member of the Shriver Center Higher Education consortium, a group of twelve Baltimore-area colleges and universities committed to responding to the needs of the city.

Many students enter Goucher already having done some community service work in high school. That's a great start! With or without prior experience, you'll have the opportunity to get involved as soon as you arrive. A morning of community service is part of new student orientation. This is a chance to spend a few hours with other new students performing some needed service in the community.

The Coordinator of Community Service located in room G31 of Van Meter Hall, can be reached at 410-337-6483. Information about a wide variety of service opportunities is available, and the coordinator will meet with individual students or groups interested in exploring possibilities. A bulletin board outside G31 has community service opportunities posted regularly as does the webpage you are currently viewing.

In recent years, traditional volunteer service activities have been supplemented by service-learning opportunities integrated into the academic program. Click here for more service-learning information.
