Goucher supports student employment through two programs, the Goucher Work Program (GWP) and Federal Work Study Program (FWS).
The Goucher Work Program (GWP) provides all students the opportunity to earn money toward their college expenses. All full time students enrolled at Goucher College, who are eligible to work in the United States, have the opportunity to participate in the Goucher Work Program. Students work for a variety of reasons including earning money for books, tuition or spending money. Regardless of the reason, the GWP affords students the opportunity to earn money to support their Goucher Education.
The Federal Work Study (FWS) program provides additional funding for undergraduate students with financial need, allowing them to potentially earn additional money to help pay education expenses. Program eligibility is determined when students submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Working on Campus
Types of Jobs
Students have the opportunity to work different types of jobs, which pay different rates. Full time students may hold up to 2 jobs during the academic year.Level 1 Jobs: Pay $9.25/hr: Generally require direct supervision with specific instructions. Duties often include supporting an office’s functions administratively.
- Examples: Library Service Desk Assistant, ACE – Notetaker, Student Office Assistant
Level 2 Jobs: Pay $11.25/hr: Require higher levels of responsibility, independence, and training; may require highly specialized skills and/or supervising other students.
- Examples: Student Leader for Civic Action, ACE – Peer Tutor
Salaried Jobs: Pay rate and frequency varies: Require the highest level of responsibility and independence, and often require students to work unpredictable hours or complete work outside of their scheduled shifts. Earnings may not count toward FWS allotment. *Students holding salaried positions are limited to working one additional job.

- Examples include: Goucher Poll Student Surveyor, Alumnae/i Weekend Student Workers

Supplemental Work Program
The Supplemental Work Program (SWP) is an administrative process that students can use if they believe that the 2 job limit is inequitable or otherwise harmful to their personhood.
Students must submit a work portfolio which contains a resume, cover letter and statement of resource. A statement of resource explains the need to work more than their current job cap. This may include any reason a student believes would qualify them for the removal of a job cap, such as: financial information, desire for further job education and experience, a drive for personal fulfillment, and more.
Students must submit their work portfolio to the Assistant Director for Student Employment in the Career Development Office. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.
Applications will be reviewed by the Assistant Director of Student Employment and the Director of Career Development Office based on the following criteria:
Financial reasons (statement of resource documents will be reviewed by Financial Aid Director)
Skill and experience development
Further criteria in which to view and analyze portfolios submitted to the SWP:
How closely the submitted portfolio represents a professional resume. This includes analysis of format, grammar, and structure of submitted documents.
How genuine and honest the submitted Statement for Resource is (described below). A student will not be penalized for an initial lack of experience.
The Statement of Resource should further be evaluated on each student's ability to demonstrate the negative impacts of not having another job, as well as how to alleviate the added problems of adding a new job.
The entire portfolio should be evaluated with the lens of “work ethic”.
How do I find a Job?
All on-campus positions are posted through the CDO’s online jobs and internship database, Goucher Recruit. Goucher Recruit is a comprehensive system that lists on-campus, off-campus, full time, and internship positions including community focused work programs through Community Based Learning. In addition to locating jobs, you are able to apply for positions and load resumes in your account. You can access Goucher Recruit .
How Do I Get Hired?
The interview process can be different for each department. Some supervisors may require a resume and/or an interview. Others may require a short statement of interest, while others will prefer to speak with you in person. Interviews for student employment positions are usually informal, but you still want to be prepared and make a good impression. For tips and practice preparing for your interviews, visit the Career Development Office. You should keep the following advice in mind when preparing for an interview:
- Dress appropriately and be punctual.
- Conduct yourself in the most mature manner.
- Always provide accurate and honest information.
- Be prepared to provide a copy of your class schedule, a resume, and references, if requested.
- Relax and be yourself.
What If I Don't Get Hired?
The CDO works throughout the year to develop relationships with local employers to assist you in locating employment off campus should on campus positions be filled or not meet your work needs. For more information please refer to the "Working Off Campus" section below.
How Do I Get Paid?
In order to get paid you will need to ensure that you have filled out your timesheets correctly and submitted them on time in order to be paid. You are paid bi-weekly by check or direct deposit. Direct deposit is strongly encouraged and ensures that you will have the money available, even during break periods and periods abroad.How do I complete my timesheets?
- It is your responsibility to see that the timesheet is legibly completed on a daily basis, dates and times are accurate, and that it is signed by both you and your supervisor.
- All timesheets must be submitted to the Payroll Office by 12 Noon on the Thursday after the period ending date. Timesheets submitted after the deadline will not be paid until the next pay date.
Employment Forms (I-9, W-4, MW-507, Direct Deposit Enrollment Form, Paystub Info) You will need to complete the following required employment forms BEFORE starting work to be eligible to work on campus.
- I-9 Form (PDF): Federal regulations require our Human Resources Office to collect documentation that verifies the employee's identity and eligibility to work in the United States prior to employment. You must present original identification documents (no copies) to Human Resources. Appropriate documents include your U.S. Passport, or your social security card or birth certificate, in addition to an ID, such as a driver's license. I-9 Forms are available at the Human Resources Department.
- W-4 Form (PDF): You need to submit a W-4 form for federal tax withholding purposes. As instructed by the Social Security Administration, the name on the W-4 form must match the name on your social security card. You must complete the form using your permanent home address, not your campus mailbox. If you have trouble filling out this form, we suggest contacting a parent or a legal guardian if they claim you on their taxes or contacting a tax consultant. There are special instructions for international students completing the International Student W-4 form. If you have questions regarding your W-4, contact the Payroll Department.
- MW-507 (PDF): Your earnings are subject to Maryland state tax due to your local residency while here at school. The only exception to this tax rule is if you reside in another state and commute to and from school on a daily basis.
- Direct Deposit Enrollment Form (PDF): You are strongly encouraged to participate in the Direct Deposit program. This program enables your paycheck to be deposited directly into your personal bank account automatically. If you would like to enroll, please complete the Direct Deposit Enrollment Form [pdf] and enclose a voided check or an official form or letter from your bank listing your name, account number and bank routing number. For further information, please refer to the Payroll Department. If you are a returning student and you signed up for direct deposit last year, you will be set up with direct deposit automatically this year. You will need to submit an updated direct deposit form if you have changed your bank account or would like to cancel your direct deposit.
How Many Hours Can I Work?
You may work no more than 20 hours per week while school is in session and no more than 29 hours per week when school is not in session. You can not exceed 999 hours of work in a calendar year.
- Your earnings accrued over the winter and summer break do not count against your annual allotments. You are only permitted to work a maximum of 29 hours per week during any college break period.
How Much Will I Get Paid?
During the academic semesters, your check will be distributed through the campus post office on each pay date. If you are electing direct deposit then the money will be deposited into your individual bank account on each pay date. The Office of Human Resources will notify you of paycheck delivery methods outside of the academic semesters. You should be sure to update the Office of Human Resources with any address changes to ensure the successful delivery of any paychecks sent off campus during break periods. Please note: Address changes made with SAS do not update the payroll record.
Your salary is determined by the classification level for your position using the following pay scale. Job classification is based on job responsibilities, required skills and experience, level of supervision, and degree of decision-making.
- Level 1: $9.25
- Level 2: $11.25
- Level 3: Stipend

How Do I Evaluate Positions?
The Career Development Office works to verify employment and internship opportunities for you in order to ensure that each opportunity we post is truthful and enhances your skills and experience, however, it is the your responsibility to review and evaluate each position before accepting an offer. The best way to protect yourself from an employment/internship scam is to practice vigilance before applying. Consider the following tips.
Tips for Identifying Job/Internship Scams
Research the company and job. Can you locate the company and does the job posting seem to fit? Is the contact information provided in the listing accurate to the main company information, especially the email url?
Examine whether the posting focuses only on the benefits, not the actual requirements.
Consult with the Career Development Office if the employer asks you to deposit a check for them once you are hired (if the check turns out to be fake or bounces, you may be responsible for items deposited into or cashed against your accounts) AND/OR the employer requires you to pay money up front or to use your bank account.
Confirm that the job requirements are what was stated in the job description when connecting with an employer.
Do not provide any personal information unless you feel 100%comfortable with your employer.
Listen to your gut! If it seems too good to be true, it just might be.
