Briefly describe your internship and your responsibilities as an intern.
I was an intern in the documentary department. My main responsibilities included watching documentary films submitted to HBO and writing reports on them for the department’s vice presidents. I worked with the public relations department on a weekly basis to set up screening premieres. I also worked on a marketing campaign geared toward the college demographic for the second season of the HBO series East Bound and Down.

How did you find your internship?
I found my internship through the Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) program based in New York. SEO has a partnership with HBO and recruits students for the company’s internship program.

What resources did you find particularly helpful in your internship search?
SEO helped me a lot with finding this internship and preparing for interviews.

Why did you choose your internship? What factored into your search and applying?
I chose this internship because I have a passion for television and film, and HBO is critically acclaimed for its programming. I felt that I would get the best hands-on experience at HBO.

What were you most apprehensive about going into your internship?
I was most apprehensive about fitting into the corporate work environment.

What did you hope to gain from your internship experience?
I hoped to gain a better understanding of the creative and corporate sides of television and film.

How did your internship experience influence your academic and career interests/goals/plans?
My internship experience helped me fine-tune my focus on the type of career I want to pursue after college.

What were the most challenging aspects of your internship?
The most challenging aspects of my internship were getting adjusted to the large work load and long hours.

What were most rewarding aspects of your internship?
The most rewarding aspect of my internship was seeing the results of something that I worked on finally appear on television.

Any funny/embarrassing things happen during your internship?
An embarrassing moment that I had during my internship was when I went on the set of an HBO documentary and was put on the spot numerous times on camera.

How do you feel your internship prepared you for the real world?
Working at HBO prepared me for the real world on so many different levels. I feel that I have a competitive advantage after having interned there because the program is led by some of the best people in the field, and they provide their interns with genuine advice and guidance.

What advice would you give to students to help them make the most of their internship experience?
I would tell students to NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK! It is important to build as many connections with people as you can.
