Originally hailing from Caracas, Venezuela, Andrea Valencia's Goucher College experience marked her first foray into extended international residency. Since then, she's been working at the Paris headquarters of Sotheby's, and planning for graduate school.
Driven by a desire to combine her passion for fine art with her linguistic prowess, Andrea Valencia used the experience she gained at Goucher to land an international internship at the Paris headquarters of Sotheby's, a renowned auction house.
Valencia's original contract with Sotheby's stipulated that she would spend three months working for the company's 19th Century Paintings department, but her professionalism quickly led to an extension, allowing her to work in Paris for a full year.
Her duties at Sotheby's included transporting important paintings to and from expert appraisers and clients, researching information for sale catalogues, and compiling complex inventory lists for auctions held in Paris, Tokyo, London, Amsterdam, and other major international centers. Valencia's fluency in Spanish, English, and French also made her an ideal candidate to work at auction reception desks, serving as an interpreter for international clients.
Currently, Valencia still resides in Paris, where she is contemplating an M.A. in Art History at the Sorbonne University, where she spent her junior year abroad. Language-wise, she continues to perfect her French, and is considering taking up Italian or German.
