From the Author: During the summer preceding the writing of this paper I spent nine weeks working at summer camp for special needs or “at-risk” children. A large minority of the children had autism or a disorder on the autism spectrum. By the end of my thirteen-hour days I was always left wanting to know more about the autism spectrum disorders and the affect the disorders had on the life span. This paper is a result of combining my interest in autism with the principles of attachment theory learned in the Seminar on Human Development class. I explored the possibility of an infant with autism forming an attachment to their caregiver despite the symptoms and neurological aspects of the disorder that may hinder or prevent such an attachment from occurring.
