All students participating on Semester, Year, Summer, or ICA Goucher programs will be automatically enrolled in a health insurance plan tailored to meet the needs of study abroad students. Goucher will pay for this insurance for every student on Goucher semester programs, Goucher summer programs, and Goucher ICAs. The insurance carrier is ACE American Insurance Company with arrangements being made by CMI Insurance, a FrontierMEDEX Company.
Prior to the start of the program abroad, OIS staff will register students for the insurace program. Students will receive information about how to use the health insurance policy from the Office of International Studies prior to departure for study abroad.
Features of the CMI Study Abroad Insurance
The insurance policy gives all the details of coverage, including explanation of benefits, exclusions, and definitions. For questions regarding specific benefits or coverage, call the ACI Claims office at 1-888-293-9229. The FrontierMEDEX Member Center website is available to students approved to participate in a Goucher semester or yearlong study abroad programs after they have submitted their $200 deposit upon acceptance.
In compliance with federal law, CMI Insurance cannot be used for travel in OFAC sanctioned countries, one of which is Cuba.
Faculty and Staff
Faculty and staff traveling on behalf of official college business are also covered by ACE American Insurance Company with arrangements being made by CMI Insurance, a FrontierMEDEX Company. The faculty and staff member insurance policy can be accessed here. Click on Goucher-Before You Take Off for more information.
What is Not Covered Through CMI Study Abroad Insurance
While the following is not exhaustive, it is provided to outline several expenses not covered through CMI Insurance.
Trip cancellation and interruption due to non-medical reasons are not covered (severe weather, transportation strikes, terrorist incidents). This type of insurance can be purchased through a travel agency or travel insurance company like Travel Guard or Travelex.
Medical expenses and medication not covered by the Frontier/MEDEX health insurance are the responsibility of the individual student. If a student plans to travel prior to or after the Goucher study abroad program, additional coverage should be purchased directly from CMI because the policy purchased for students covers them only while traveling directly to and from, and participating in, the Goucher study abroad program.
Maintain Existing Domestic Coverage
All Goucher students are required to carry a primary domestic insurance policy as mandated by Goucher College. Students are required to maintain their domestic primary insurance in the United States and should NOT terminate their existing coverage; if a student were to experience health problems abroad and were required to return early to the US, that student might be prohibited from reenrolling in their health insurance program because of a pre-existing medical condition, and would be without coverage.
Health Insurance for Non-Goucher Study Abroad Participants
Students participating in non-Goucher semester, year, or summer programs are strongly encouraged to purchase the health insurance plan. Students can contact Frontier/MEDEX at 410-308-7920 or 1-800-586-0753 to enroll.
