Laura Ruas holds Bachelors and Masters of Music degrees from Juilliard where she was a student of the esteemed bass pedagogue, Homer Mensch.
Areas of Scholarly Expertise and Interest
Since arriving in Baltimore, Laura has become one of the region's most sought after Double Bassists. She is a member of the Baltimore Opera Orchestra, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, Principal Bass of the Concert Artists of Baltimore and a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company Orchestra, which is based in New York City. In addition, Laura has regularly performed with the Harrisburg, Alabama and National Symphonies. In 2005 Laura was invited to join the Cabrillo Music festival by Maestra Marin Alsop.
As a member of the New World Symphony, Laura had the privilege of working with such esteemed conductors as Michael Tilson Thomas, Neemi Jarvi, Leonard Bernstein, James Conlon and John Eliot Gardner. She also toured South America, France, China, Japan and Hong Kong with the Symphony. Laura has also been Principal Bass of the Palm Beach Opera and a regularly engaged musician with the Florida Philharmonic.
In addition to being a faculty member at Goucher College, Laura serves as Double Bass instructor at Baltimore School for the Arts, one of the top ten public high schools in the state of Maryland.
