Environmental Studies Opportunities and Internships

Special Interest Housing

The Green House

The Green House is a special-interest house dedicated to environmental sustainability. Students volunteer to live together on the Green House floors within the same residence hall each semester. By living together, we strive to influence and teach one another about the issues surrounding sustainability. Through bi-monthly programming we continue to broaden our perspective on different aspects of environmentalism. We also like to commit to making small lifestyle changes to reduce our carbon footprint and to make a neutral or positive impact on our local environment. We encourage the campus to do the same through our "Green Your Week" campaign, which provides suggestions on how to be more sustainable each day of the week. Clubs

Campus Agriculture Co-op

Our mission is to raise awareness on campus of the benefits of sustainable agriculture through a composting and gardening project. We hope to reduce the amount of unproductive waste generated by Goucher by composting food waste from the dining hall kitchens and using this compost to aid the growing of herbs which are then purchased by Bon Appétit, the college's food services management company. This creates a sustainable life cycle supported by and occurring on Goucher's campus. We hope that by starting on a small scale we create a working model for the growth of this program. Earthworks [formerly the Goucher Climate Action Group - needs to be changed on green site and localist]

Earthworks' mission is to help the campus reduce its greenhouse gas emissions through the use of renewable energy; energy-efficient appliances; and better sustainable practices, such as recycling, making environmentally friendly lifestyle choices, and purchasing sustainable foods. Earthworks also focuses on educating the student body about climate issues both on campus and in the greater community and motivating them to act. Internship Program

Internships are a very important facet of the curriculum at Goucher College. As such, the environmental studies faculty members consider well-structured internships to be essential to a student's education. The variety of internships that have been completed under the supervision of this program is evidence of the flexible and creative applicability of degrees in environmental studies. Students find internship opportunities through the Career Development Office, through faculty and staff members, or on their own.

A detailed description of the off-campus experience is published by the Career Development Office each year and fully describes the guidelines and timetable for internships. Students interested in arranging an internship in environmental studies should contact their individual academic advisors.
