Concentration in Secondary Education with Certification in Chemistry

Students planning to teach chemistry in secondary schools after graduation should consult with the chairs of the Departments of Chemistry and Education as early as possible in their academic careers for certification requirements in education. For certification requirements, see description under the Education Department.

Honors in the Major

Majors in the Chemistry are encouraged to strive for honors in the major at graduation. Students who exhibit mastery of the subject in both course work and additional academic endeavors will be awarded either a degree with distinction or honors in the major.

Degree with Distinction Requirements:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a minimum of 90 credits of work, including at least 45 semester hours in 200- and 300-level courses.

Honors in Chemistry Requirements:

  • A GPA of 3.5 in chemistry, mathematics, and physics courses required for the major.
  • Two semesters of independent research or a senior thesis with a grade of A or A-.
